This. I want to buy Clannad but can't bring myself to buy it because I don't want to watch it and be sad again. I chose a really bad time in my life to watch it and had no idea what I was in for.

Well, can't say I ever 'cried' or bawled my eyes out, but I have shed a tear or two...
Tengen Toppa Gurren Laggan - such a beautiful anime.

Don't judge me. I don't know why I won't, but when ever I see a sad anime I always make it through without crying. Clannad for example, was on the edge of crying, but tears never came out. Angel Beats! was on the edge, but still some how held it in. Zero No Tsukaima, was just about to, but something told me I shouldn't have because I was stupid for thinking the main character would actually die even though there was still 2 more seasons to watch, smh...
Kaichou Wa Maid-Sama < That was the one. I didn't cry tears of sadness or grieving, but tears of joy because the main character was really stubborn about her feeling and I was just so happy and relieved that the ending came out so good the way it did. Great Anime right there if you haven't seen it.

Has to be Clannad ~ After Story. Don't want to admit it since I'm a guy, but it's true. I think it was because a lot of the situations were so real and possible, unlike other anime. I know there was the whole 'other world' thing, but that was only a small part of the story (you could say it's big if you look at it from a certain perspective I guess). I also found the original series depressing at times, and I found the end of the Fuko ark was the saddest. Luckily, the series had a lot more humor to balance it out.
