I agree with you, my fellow anime compatriot, Iashakezula. It does take the culmination of good plot design, artistry, music, and character development/progression to help bring about a 'true' emotional response in anime or even shows today. Anyone can have a few laughs or the occasional tear here and there, but it's when you truly become vested in the show and can connect with it on a personal level that you know you feel the emotions of not just the creator, but of the characters who are being portrayed as individuals as well in their respective realms in the show. Even in some instances, there are those supposed 'cheesy shows' that we all roll our eyes in the back of our head going, 1.) "Why doesn't he or she just tell her how the other feels, DAMMINT!", or, 2.) "Which one of these multitude of gorgeous girls should I choose now?"
But, in all seriousness, I believe love shouldn't always be rushed and that even the harem theme shouldn't always be seen as a stereotypical portrayal as a means to garner more viewers. No matter where in the world one may be, how many times has someone rushed into a relationship just because it felt like the 'right thing' to do. Marriage in most respects is now seen as a means to an end in today's society. Granted, mad prop's to those who are currently married and have been so for at least 1 year or longer. Especially, if you knew each other a number of years beforehand. So, the lesson learned from my previous statements? 1.) Even if it takes a while for him/her to tell each other how they feel, make sure you've found out as much as there is to know about one another. When that climactic scene arrives in your relationship, make it count. 2.) Even if you do happen to have 4, 8, or even 16 females surrounding you at all times, as long as you can view each of them as a friend and not just an object to defile, it's not so wrong. But, on the flip side, it could be Japan's or the creators way of going, "Hey world! I know you all like to 'live free' and 'have sex' with as many people as much as possible, but if you can be surrounded by multiple men or women and not cave into one or the other, then you are more of a true person for not just seeing them as objects to be devoured one by one. You have options, so take your time now. Choose wisely, you fortunate yet lucky bastard you!

thats was deep Jacob463,....

Yeah even though the situation might be pretty sad and depressing but if I have no emotional attachment to the character, I dont cry at all.

But for emotions of love of the opposite sex is much much harder to feel via anime

Turn A Gundam - Got choked up a couple of times, but
Yet I still watch it every year. Love that show.
GiTS: SAC 2nd Gig - The end of that makes me sad just thinking about it.
Casshern Sins - I'd read about the finale, but it still got to me. Everyone was just so... broken in that show in so many ways.
Cowboy Beebop
MS Igloo
Last Exile, both of 'em.

Ones that came close:
Seed - Mwu.
00 - Lockon Mk I
Naruto Shippuden -

Clannad After Story is the only anime that actually brought tears and on a regular basis at that. Though there are a few that felt like I might, but somehow avoided.
