I decided to draw the problem rather than describe it: Anyone know what might be causing this? I have tried varying the area of the gif used and the size but it all gives the same problem.

This is a problem with the image re-sizer that CR uses on the uploads, try re-sizing it before you upload it. Make it exactly 200x200 px.
