To be honest, Higurashi seems more like a hack and slash horror style whereas Another was more mysterious and didn't try and throw blood around all the time. overall I don't find either of them scary but if I were to choose I'd go with Another.

It's great, more of a mystery surrounding the origins of vampires than anything scary. It gets very violent in the second half. Hundred Stories, or Requiem from the Darkness, is also a great one, probably more so than Another, Shiki, and When They Cry. I'd recommend checking them both out. There's also the 2 episode OVA Denpa teki na Kanojo.

I remember watching Requiem from the Darkness. The art style was really weird though. It was a good show too.

Shiki and When They Cry are probably the best horror animes.

Also what about Elfen Lied?

Elfen Lied, if you can get past the first 15 minutes of the first episode you'll like it, someone told me that once. Lots of gore, lots of tears. Watch Denpa Teki na Kanojo though, it has valuable life lessons as well as murder, gore, and other issues. The ending credits song which I believe is door by Rumika is really good, it talks about finding kindness from loneliness, which fits the 2 episode OVA quite well.

I know that's what they called this series in the American release, but this translation always makes me cringe. What the hell is up with half ass translations. Its supposed to be When the Cicadas Cry. It wouldn't bother me so much but if they did the same half ass translation for the Umineko series it would also be When They Cry instead of When the Seagulls Cry. But what really gets me is that I think they did the manga under Higurashi When They Cry which is even more half assed because they translated half the title but decided to leave Higurashi as Higurashi instead of changing it to Cicadas.

Just a pet peeve of mine.

I know this isn't an anime, but I believe it deserves honorable recognition. It's called Ibitsu and it's great.

Ibitsu ~ A boy went to take his trash out late one night, and found a strange, creepy, lolita woman sitting amongst the garbage bags. She asked if he had a little sister, and he answered her, hurrying afterwards back to his apartment. When he looked out the window, she was gone. Who is the strange woman, and why does she give him such a bad feeling? ~

I prefer Another. It had more of an eerie feeling and music to make you jump at suspenseful parts. Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni just had me laughing at all the blood and kills.
