Hulu used to have Higurashi as When They Cry but it doesn't look like they have it anymore.... too bad I never got around to finishing it and I'll only want to watch anime on legal sites.

Like I said, the show was decent until the last episode. Everyone acted so dumb and panicked like brainless monkeys. Like explained in the movie: that was all part of the 'curse' in Another. That's why those old people who owned the inn went crazy too.

While Another has the basis of semi-random deaths with a supposed all powerful curse in the background which falls into final destination category way to much. Still Higuarshi is effective because "innocent" girls change into monsters. While Another hits you with who and how is someone going to die. Either way 2 lessons to be learned. 1) Do not trust little girls from villages in the middle of nowhere who are exceedingly bossy. 2) Be careful when walking down the steps with an umbrella.

Ironically that's the exact opposite of the correct lesson trying to be taught by Higurashi. Not trusting your friends is why shit hits the fan every time. The thing is all of the kids are good people at heart but succumb to madness due to perceived isolation . Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide Not trusting bossy little girls from villages in the middle of nowhere is what causes Keiichi to go Axe Crazy on his two best friends with a baseball bat because he is going all paranoid schizophrenic and hallucinates that they are out to kill him when they are trying to help him. All the other characters that snap pretty much do so when they feel that they have been backed into a corner with nowhere to turn to. The entirety of the story is about Rika coming to understand that the answer to escaping her fate is not to do it alone or just give up, but to instead trust her friends to help her out, as well as trusting herself enough to help them.

I can't comment on the series as a whole, but it does have a creepy atmosphere ... at times. Higurashi can be pretty scary, from what I've seen, but nothing too scary has happened yet. Mostly just setting up. I WILL tell you that I find it annoying that most creepy scenes so far are interrupted by some moe girls popping in.

Higurashi is among my favorite anime, one of the most memorable things I have ever watched, and is the most I have ever been into any mystery.

If you watched the whole thing, then rewatch it- you'll see what I mean. Another... was just creepy, in my opinion. Scary, yes- but mostly creepy.

Click to show or hide I would be running away screaming if Rena came at me with that cleaver. I mean holy crap when she snaps she is the scariest character of the whole cast. Though I did think that Another get scary towards the end.
