Biggest fear of moving to Japan
Posted 6/17/07
Have you ever wanted to move to another country? What's your biggest fear of moving there?

I want to move to Japan to become an English teacher, and to get involved with a church there. There are other reasons behind it, but I don't really need to list them here. My parents suspected my biggest fear would be the cultural difference, or learning the language, but that's not it. I was talking it over with my Dad in the car. My biggest fear is more that even if I learn the language, I'll never be able to really connect with anyone in Japanese like I can with English. I know a lady who's lived here in America for a long time, and still struggles with English. Her child and husband don't know Thai, so I'm wondering how it must feel. She's so strong for doing that, with the help of God. Will I be able to be like that?

Anyone else? What are your fears on moving to a different country? [if you don't want to move to a different country, hypothetically speaking]. Or if you have moved to another country already, did you have any fears before it? Do you still have any fears?

I'm sorry if this topic has already been made.

I love Japan I wouldnt have any fears going there. Ive made 5 trips there and it's great. Though I have a bit of an advantage because some of my family is living in Tokyo and some of my japanese friends live in Osaka, so everytime I go there they always show me the good spots.

I have two big fears when it comes to moving (or even traveling) to other countries: 1. the language (if it's a non-English-speaking country) and 2. the money. xx; I am completely clueless when it comes to other currencies.

Japanese people are pretty xenophobic about non-japanese and can be slightly negative about you if its obvious you are a foreigner.

Learning customs can take time, such as waiting to drink until the elder starts first, etc.

Being a female can also be a disadvantageous because Japan is still very patriarchal even though its 2007, so beware of slight discrimination.

Make sure your employer will sponsor you for your visa, otherwise its is a very difficult process to get through on your own.

However, Japan is very safe, and walking alone at night is not that dangerous when compared to North America.

Eating out isn't a problem either, as most restaurants have plastic molds of what the dish looks like, or pictures outside the shop that you can point out to a waiter rather than trying to verbalize your order.

On a side note

I'm scared about "connecting" with people too! I'm dying to go to Japan, but well, I don't know Japanese! I hope to to learn someday, but yeah, even if I do learn, I know it won't be good enough...
I would be scared about the maps too, and reading signs

heh I've heard about the whole foreigner thing too

aye, but not on the same scale of rape in Japan. I could search u up a whole list of British women who were raped and killed in the most horrific manner which would send people shivering.

Wow, I'm scared about that too...!

That can't possibly happen ALL the time though

That's true. Then I guess it's going to take a lot of faith. If God really wants me in Japan for a reason, He won't kill me off. His will is planned perfectly, I'll follow it. If I'm raped, I'm raped. If I'm killed, I'm killed. Let's just say, in my mind, most likely it will happen, because I'm scared of everything. I won't make it happen, but I'm deffinently scared it will. In America, Japan, or Britain. So if it's going to happen, why live life a coward?

Its been a long time since my parents wanted me to go to Japan (ever since i was a child) .. probably because they want us to live with them ... I have 2 reasons why i ddnt choose to live there ... 1. The adaptation to another culture will be hard ... especially when you dont know their language. 2. Im afraid of discrimination. But now my perspective is new ... I think i will try to go there ... to experience what my father calls "the beauty of Japan" ...

Its not living as a coward, Don't get me wrong theres nothing wrong with japanese people in General. but such as porn that depicts rape as a female enjoying it can mess with kids heads. i think thats what she meant. I also don't want to judge your faith but If you were raped would you call it a test of faith? and if you werent would'nt that be a "sign" from god?
