Unfortunately this console generation had been a bit lacking the JRPG department compared to generations past. You can still find good JRPGs to play if you own a DS/PSP/Vita as the genre has seemed to find a good home on them. I'd love to see more good JRPGs on the home consoles though, but I think a bit part of it is now we are in the HD days of gaming where developers seem to have the state of mind that if you aren't moving around or doing something everyone two seconds that people will loose interest in the game.

JRPGs seem to have fallen way back in terms of popularity. This console generation has been dominated by the FPS and WRPG, now there is an entire generation of gamers where the majority have never even played a JRPG let alone know what it is. It's become more and more niche as more developers in Japan decide to not localize their wonderful games. It's sad cause FFVII, a JRPG was one of the first games I've ever played that totally sucked me in. After finishing that game? GAMER FOR LIFE (that also enjoyed jrpgs)

There are still alot of great JRPGs still out today, just not as much in days past.

I really like the Persona series, really wish more people knew about it!

I picked up Persona 2: Eternal Punishment some years ago, since I'd heard it was an interesting series, but I haven't gotten around to playing through it. Initially I figured I'd try to find the previous games in the series and play through them, but I never did find them. Last I looked, they seemed to have become rather expensive, unfortunately.

From the little bit I've played of the game, it started off interestingly, and it had a bit different atmosphere and mechanics from other jrpgs I've played. I just don't know if it makes sense to play through this game without knowing the events of the preceding games. I suppose I could play through and find out, but with the time these games tend to take, I'd be annoyed if halfway through the story made no sense because it assumed I'd played the previous games.

What? then y is it not just called a RPG? i dont see the need to put Japanese in there lol

It's err, complicated but most of all messy. Game genres in general are a bit, odd, but the genera of RPG is by far the most messy. It has a growing number of subcategories and hybrids. It used to be their distinguishing feature was leveling but that's becoming less the case. As for the existence of specifically the term JRPG, I think this covers it better than I ever could.

As for JRPG pick. Amazingly enough they are on the PC, might be steam only.
Recettear: an Item Shop Tale and Fortune Summoners. Recettear is an item shop sim + dungeon crawler, you have a large debt to repay and you run an item shop to try and make the money back. Capitalism Ho! FS is a side-scrolling platformer with quite interesting action combat. It's quite challenging and a lot more fun than I expected.

Persona 3 and 4 have standalone stories with only very minor references between the two, not sure about Persona 1 and 2 though

btw is your username from Analogue: A Hate Story? another great game everyone should play!

Rpgs from Japan aren't that all popular. Most of the titles have a cult following.

It's getting really hard to find a decent JRPG. I'm so thankful that "Ni no Kuni" was ported. I literally bought a PS3 just to play it. Fantastic game.

I love JRGS but i don't think they sell as much because of peoples lack to "Learn" combat mechanics where you have to sit and watch a boss take a swing at you and 1hit kill you because you forgot to cast a magic reflecting spell, and now you have to start that 30minute boss battle over again. But the fact that many people don't play jrpg's make them seem cooler to me. If everyone was doing it then it wouldn't be as cool.

Today's life lesson: if you're going to release a game commercially, don't forget to announce it. I say this because Atelier Totori was released for the Vita on PSN in English today... but the company didn't mention it at all. Gotta advertise it in order to sell the game to more than a handful of fans.

Atelier Totori was a PS3 game first. While it might not be *easy* to find copies of the PS3 version in English, it's still relatively inexpensive and not rare. It combines RPG gameplay with life simulation/time management, and like most of the recent entries in the Atelier franchise, its aesthetic is definitely cute.

This is the exact opposite of another common problem: after years of official and fan-generated hype, the final product can never live up to expectations. A slightly less common problem is "eery silence," in which it's never clear whether the game will be released in English. I'm specifically thinking of Dragon Quest 10, and all of the games Falcom has made since Trails in the Sky.

I used to play a lot of JRPG games, back on my PS2. But now their are not many that interest me. I've lost all interest in Final Fantasy after 13 and 13-2, although if Type-0 gets released in the U.S I would possibly buy a vita just to play it. Atlus has seemingly moved to putting their RPGs on handhelds, and since I have a 3ds I'm okay with that, but I really wan't Persona 5 on a console. Those were really the only JRPG franchises I've ever been interested in. I really liked the Xenosaga games, as well as Star Ocean 3 and Drakengard.

I was very excited when I saw Drakengard 3 was announced, and I can't wait to play it, if it gets localized.
