My first year of college I moved into town and I rented a house out with my friends girlfriend who became like a sister to me, lets call her K for this story. After moving in we realized that our neighbors were a young couple with a 1 year old daughter. They lived in a pretty beat up house that didn't look like it was getting taken care of, but we lived in a pretty shady part of town so it was the norm. They were probably in their mid-20's and they were always constantly fighting and yelling everyday, and I soon was under the impression that the husband was a drug-dealer and alcoholic and the wife was a pill head just by our occasional meetings out by the street. They had the COPS called on them several times for domestic disputes but the cops would always just left without doing anything and nothing changed. One night we had just went to bed and we heard screaming and doors being slammed so we ran to the window of our apartment and saw our neighbors having their usual dispute except it was different this time, the wife was beating on the door screaming "give me back my baby!" And the door opened up and the husband shoved the baby not so gently into her arms and slammed the door shut. The wife than sat down on the porch and was crying and she was calling somebody on her phone which ended up with her asking to stay with the person but the conversation ended with f**k you! I need you right now and won't help!" We watched her for a couple minutes and I noticed it had to be at least 25 degrees outside. I turned to K and said "I'm going to get her." K was scared and told me "no you can't do that, wonder if the husband see's you?! We just need to keep praying, it's all we can do." I just looked at her for a moment, she knew I wasn't religious but I had to say it, "you're praying isn't doing anything, its just there to make you think that it is. You stay here and pray and I'll go down there and actually do something about this." So I grabbed my favorite wooden baseball bat from last season of Legion baseball, walked down there, told her that she and her baby were staying at my place tonight and she didn't have to worry about her husband hurting her. I could tell right away she was high on pills by the glazed look in her eyes, and it was surprising cause it was the first time I ever got a really good look at her and she was truly a very beautiful women. So she slept on my couch that night with her baby and the next morning I called my aunt who works for the YWCA and she came and talked to her. I'll leave it there.

Praying is for people who want to help but can't and want to feel like they're doing something. But it's also used by people who are too lazy or too scared to take action.

Hmm...now as a rule I stay away from religion online, but I'll answer this one.

Wishing? No. Praying? Yes, but only if you're working in harmony with the prayer and whoever you're asking. And you have to be specific. I look at it this way. When we ask our parents for something and we're disobedient, how likely are they to give it to us? Same with who/whatever we're praying too.

There's so many things that factor into praying, but I won't discuss it in this thread Just that I do believe that some prayers are answered.

It's not wishing or praying. It's hope and your own strength.

Yes, It does work wishing and praying. It is the first step to get what you want.
A wish is the catalyst, to make your passion light and achive what you want.
Praying for God, give you the feeling of a higher entity (that handle the power of all) is with you.
Pray + wish + do what you can to get what you wish for.

Something good happens? Credit a god.
Something bad happens? Blame self or claim it's a greater trial.

With those odds you surely can't lose. I will go with perceived reality as we know it within the constructs of our physical world and rely on the only way of actually getting something done: getting off one's butt and doing it.

I tend to put "hoping" in the same basket as wishing and praying. You can wish, hope, and pray for a parking spot downtown. You can wish, hope, and pray that your little one gets over the disease. it's all up to fate/God/the universe whether it actually happens or not.

No it doesn't. It only works in fairy tails. even if some homeless dude wishes and prays he will always be a worthless drunk unless he actually tries to do something about his problems.

I think that it depends on what you wish for. A worthy wish would prob come true but you do have to put some effort into things on your own. I pray for my family's safety.

It works as well as any placebo does.

From a scientific sense, wishing/praying hard can cause one to become more focused on the object of desire which can alter outcomes like making you more confident or resilient, and that alteration may make enough of the wish/prayer come true so as to say "this shit works."

Would it work on something beyond your power to attain? No, there isn't any known method of obtaining something through thought without concrete action.

You can pray for a hard boiled egg as much as you want, but unless you go make/get one then it isn't going to magically appear before you.
Also... correlation doesn't mean causation.
