I may be taking this the wrong way but this line in the site news makes me question if Crunchy got Attack on Titan. If I remember correctly it airs tomorrow, right??

Next week meaning Monday, I'd guess.

Anything's possible with Crunchyroll. Pet Girl of Sakurasou got announced 2 hours before Crunchyroll started streaming it. Say I love you started 4-5 episodes late, GJ Club 7 , and Little Busters 14 :-P

I think YTV has streamed on Crunchyroll quite a bit ~ Space Bros., Beelzebub, 11 more anime, and 4 J-dramas ~ so they likely understand that the pirating inside Japan will start from the premier broadcast or narrowcast, whichever comes first, and simulcasting on Crunchyroll does no commercial damage at all to YTV's broadcast.

That experience seems likely to be why what looks like a mid-level member of the broadcast committee (day after premier, day before last broadcast) picked up handling of the international streaming distribution rights.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ THIS ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

It'd be different if there was a trend of never announcing a series after its premier broadcast. For all we know, it could be simulcast against a later broadcaster in the broadcaster pool, with the first week delayed two days, and announced two hours before it starts streaming.

Until its either announced as Funimation, or a TAN exclusive, or they say that the simulcast announcements are done, there's no telling.

Could someone explain to me how this whole thing works? I'm honestly pretty curious about it. Like is there a bidding war for these shows? Is Crunchyroll directly bidding against their competitors like Funimation? And if that's the case who all are the major players?

I just find this whole process interesting.

Crunchyroll puts in an expression of interest for every series.

As far as bidding wars, if a home video distributor (Funimation, Sentai, Viz, Aniplex of America, NIS America, etc.) expresses an interest, then Crunchyroll is not going to get a direct streaming license as long as the home video distributor is negotiating. If there are any bidding wars, they would be between home video distributors.

However, even if Crunchyroll does not get the direct streaming license, some home video distributors have been willing to sublicense streaming to Crunchyroll ~ mainly Sentai, Aniplex of America and NIS America. So even when Crunchyroll does not get a direct streaming license from the international licensor in Japan, they can sometimes still get the streaming rights from a North American distributor who licensed the series.

Update to initial message (Thursday, April 4, 2013 @ 10:09 PM CDT):

Added information on announced Funimation simulcasts of Karneval and The Devil Is a Part Timer (Hataraku Maou-sama).
Added information on announced CR simulcasts of Flowers of Evil, Samurai Bride and The Severing Crime Edge.

I decided to delay adding version 3 of the Neregate chart, since reorganizing the series list to match can take some time, and I have to finish getting a computer system ready for a client this weekend. If that goes well, I may do the chart update on Saturday or Sunday night.

Interestingly, at the moment I posted the update, Funimation wasn't making their simulcast premiere easy to find. It wasn't listed on their simulcast page or series list. It was only by a bit of URL spelunking that I found it. In contrast, it was easy to find at Hulu.

Sadly, I feel Yamato 2199 might end up being one of those few titles that doesn't get a legal stream.

I will be very happy if I am wrong.

CR has pulled off "I didn't think anyone would get that" acquisitions before in the past, so perhaps they can do it again. Even if they were going to announce it, it would be delayed, as it premieres at what would be Sunday morning in the United States, and we already know CR isn't going to be making any simulcast announcements this weekend.

I figured it would be a shot in the dark. Hell.. I don't care if it's another GJ Club type acquisition (6 episodes late).. I want to see it in HD legally.. I can at least hope.. even if in vain LOL

Until Funimation or someone like them announces that they have licensed it and/or the season goes by, you can't say with 100% certainity that Yamato 2199 is impossible for Crunchyroll.

Series in the Nichigo timeslot have been simulcasted before. Whether Bandai Visual licenses it to Funimation or to Crunchyroll or if Voyager Entertainment makes a extremely stupid move in blocking any legal stream of the remake remains to be seen. I'd say that Funimation has a 40-60% chance, CR has a 20% chance and utter self-destructive stupidity has maybe a 15% chance(I'll let the remaining percentages go to Viz or Discotek for license)
