Off the top of my head, I don't recall NIS America series getting Latin American rights before, while two Sentai series have ... so on that, since Gargantia is streaming to Latin America, Sentai would seem to be more likely.

It could have been a direct license from YTV so NISA, Sentai, or even Viz or Funimation are all in the running.

I'd say that Funimation could still announce this later at some point or Viz as I can see this having some Western appeal(it's like a much better Waterworld. And yes, I've seen that movie).

There is another title I can think of, one which isn't being simulcast, but it isn't one I would normally think of Sentai getting.

Gargantia seems the most likely. However there was that ANN article (http://tinyurl.com/chcnaw5) about Yamato 2199 coming overseas as Star Blazers 2199 so it could also be that.

It could have been a direct license from YTV so NISA, Sentai, or even Viz or Funimation are all in the running.

We do know that Aniplex of America and NISA sublicense to Crunchyroll, because they announce the sublicensing.

But, yes, we don't in fact know whether some home video distributors are asking for licenses that are compatible with a Crunchyroll direct license, so that Crunchyroll can license in parallel, and whether some or all are sublicensing to Crunchyroll. It is widely assumed that Sentai is licensing titles and sublicensing to Crunchyroll, to help cover the minimum guarantee, but it is possible they are licensing on terms that are compatible with a Crunchyroll license, in order to reduce the minimum guarantee that they have to offer.

Except when we have an explicit sublicense announcement to go on, we are reading tea leaves, looks for suggestive patterns or slips that seem like evidence one way or the other.

It seems likely that Crunchyroll normally sublicenses from Sentai, because the streaming region is so much more uniform than the series where Crunchyroll is the sole licensor. Crunchyroll clearly presses for whatever additional access it can get, which generates the patchwork quilt effect outside of the Seven English Speaking Countries and Scandinavia.

However, Gargantia does seem likely to have been a direct license, since they overlooked Latin America in the original region announcements. The Crunchyroll announcements copy and pastes the region rights directly from the contract, so if they missed a region its likely that region was added at the last minute in a rider. So when/if a home video distributor is announced for Gargantia, that could be a tell that one or more have taken to asking for terms that are compatible with a direct Crunchyroll streaming license.

I have no idea when Anime on Demand put up episode 1 of Red Data Girl, but... well, it's there. It looks like they also plan to show Date A Live, judging by their catalog.

It's Garden of Words, a Makato Shinkai movie premiering 31 May. Given Crunchyroll's relationship with both Makoto Shinkai and Sentai, I hope it comes here sometime.

Dang, TAO beat me by three minutes.

Hopefully if the license region is not worldwide outside Japan, it will be available on Global Shinkai Day (sic).

The US now gets to enjoy most of them for the whole year, the older ones, Canada shut out for once.

Had to run out and buy the discs and glad I did actually, the full 5 minute PV version of "One More Time, One More Chance" on the import "5cm per second" BD is the most emotional PV I think I've ever seen as it pretty much condenses the entire movie into 5 minutes set to that beautiful song! Great to see the beautiful scenery in 1080p without subs as well.

If I have to wait a year I just might buy Garden of Words now. 4500 yen for the import BD with soundtrack CD, comes out in June... super tempting!

10/11.

Sentai announces My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU. Both of the first two AoD now announced, the other two AoD are FUNIMATION titles ... which is the first positive sign in about a year for Anime-on-Demand being able to establish a sustainable business model in the UK.

This brings the problems in getting series for Latin America into sharp focus. All ten of Sentai's licenses lack Latin America. One out of two of Aniplex USA's licenses lack Latin America. And the shared / sub / parallel license with Funimation (whatever it is), has the narrowest region of all, locking out not only Latin America but also Scandinavia and the rest of Northern Europe outside of UK/Eire, and locking out the "Rugby Union Tri-nations" of Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

So if the guess on Gargantia being licensed by Sentai is correct, there is a glimmer of hope there that Crunchyroll was able to go directly to the original rights owner and add Latin America, or was able to go to Sentai and get Sentai to add Latin America.
