Late night anime is more of an ad (either for the DVD/BD, manga, and/or merchandise). If a company is making an anime primarily to promote the manga, a 3-5 minute anime works almost as well as a longer anime (at least for comedies) and costs a lot less. |

A substantial number of this season's new series are short form anime (3-5 minutes per episode). From the list for this season, I counted 9 that fall into this category. |

Do these episodes have multiple episodes within 1 episode? For example, three or four 5-minute episodes into 1 episode? Also, do you or anyone know when they started to do this? I think this is the 1st time I've heard of this, lol. |

I think this is the 1st time I've heard of this, lol. They are stand-alone single episodes, not multiple segments in a longer episode. It has been going on for some time. The earliest example (at least on Crunchyroll) I can personally recall was Chi's Sweet Home: Chi's New Address back in spring 2009. Over the past year or so, short form series have become a regular feature of each season, although not in the numbers we've seen this time. A few examples from last season include Chitose Get You!, Lychee Light Club, and PoyoPoyo. An older and more famous example (but not at Crunchyroll) is Hetalia, which dates back to the beginning of 2009. It was a net anime, however, while most of the recent ones air on TV. |

I absolutely hate 2 - 5 minute anime. It sucks that this season is mostly short anime. :l

It's cheap to license and makes the database fuller and more attractive to prospective subscribers. I'm guessing that's why Crunchyroll gets so many short episode anime.
I'd probably do the same thing. I don't really like most of them and I feel somewhat trolled when I read a description for an anime that interests me and it turns out to be 2 minute shorts. But there's also enough good long form anime on the site to off-set any displeasure I feel about them. |

Blast reality. Burst it into shreds. Banishment...this world!

I liked Teekyu. It was quite hilarious at times even if it was a short anime.

As long as it's good, i don't mind 3 minute anime. I loved Chitose get you and teekyu, so hoping this season will be good too. (though last season was superb all together, so will be hard to top)

This is rather off-topic, but the title of the topic itself reminded me of the game "Half-minute Hero".
