They're really good sometimes. Like the 'lite' episodes of Chuunibyu are 5 minutes each, and really adorable.

I think that half the people complaining about 3-5 minute anime are trolling, flat out... the other half probably are so brain dead from watching Naruto they can't do simple math anymore and the fact that they would even cite "lack of character development" is laughable. First there are far more full length anime this season than short ones, like always, and I think there is 1 more short series this season than last. Secondly I can't believe that anyone would expect anymore than a few laughs from a series that short. Usually these things are comedies adapted from 4 panel manga, not meant to develop characters, have deep plot lines, or a gooey romance filled story. These short series are a whole different ball game, if you're looking for the aforementioned things go find something full length, otherwise expect none of things and just watch it for the fun it's supposed to be.

The bottom line is you have to go into these shows expecting to maybe get a few laughs at best, think that they are a bonus to the other 20+ shows that are full length and debuting this season (on top of the 15+ continuing from last), and if you don't like it, move on, it didn't waste that much of your time. And the production company that made it didn't eat up a bunch of their funds turning a 4 panel manga into an anime that may not have done well in 20 minute form.

i also think back to Nyarko and the fact that the first two series for that show look to have been done in Flash and were extremely short and quite funny, and eventually it got a full blown 20 minute per ep anime.

Personally, when I see Crunchyroll announce X amount of new animes and half or more of them are 3-5 minute short form series, I feel sort of cheated. I'm not saying they shouldn't be added, but it'd be nice if crunchyroll was at least up front about these shows when they announced them. There have been a few I checked out, thinking they might be good, only to find out they were short form, and lacking in anything substantial. I understand there is an appeal to them, and will admit they can sometimes be humorous, but they are not at all what I'm looking for in anime viewing.

In sort, it'd just be nice if these shorts were indicated to be just that - shorts. That way there's no confusion. >_>

"Half or more"? I count 6 out of the 18 announced thus far.

It wasn't that hard to know in advance what the length of these were; no more difficult than knowing what series would be available for this season.

In the topic here on CR for each anime season (usually started by yours truly), the listings in it mention when a series is known to be less than standard length. If that isn't to your taste, there are also websites (like Countdown) that will give you that info.

Yes, I exaggerated. It's a tricky thing on the interwebs.

Quite honestly, though, the first round of announcements they did were almost entirely these short series. Which, again, in and of itself is fine. I've no problem with them being available, being made, being announced, or anything of that sort. But despite everything else you said, my point still stands.

To me, while I greatly enjoy anime, and proudly announce to people that I watch and enjoy it, it is still a hobby. Much like video games. I partake in it, and I'll follow certain series or shows that catch my interest, but don't go out of my way to keep up on everything at all times. In fact, I get most of my anime related news right here on Crunchyroll. Which is why it bothers me that my source on anime doesn't always give me the full picture.

Could I go out of my way to research every anime before it comes out? Sure I could. Am I going to? Probably not.

If you want/like to, that's great for you. Having a passion like that for something is a great thing. Could I check your forum topics? Probably. But I could also probably research every series, and we already know my thoughts on that. I don't frequent the forums. I make the occasional comment when a topic on the front page catches my eye, or if I'm really bored and have time to kill [or, in this case, if someone quotes me and I get a notification]. But even still, as far as I can tell, you don't appear to officially represent Crunchyroll. So your topics still wouldn't be what I'm asking for.

All I'm saying is that it would be nice if it was briefly mentioned somewhere that a series was a short series. It's not a big deal, and I wasn't trying to make it out to be. It would just be nice.

I second the motion to have some kind of warning ahead of time that the series that I'm looking forward to is only going to be a 3-5 minute tease.

Blame the popularity of 4komas or whatever. Maybe such short comics should just stay comics and nothing more?

Wow, there's more? Another Crawling Chaos was the only series I knew of that used that format. Oh well, hopefully they're all as good as Nyaruko.

I don't mind short anime clips at all

Have to keep in mind that anime fans in Japan might be extremely busy with work and family that they don't have the time to set down and watch a full length episode. Thus, short anime fulfill the desire for some anime time

Can understand why short anime are made in Japan for commercial breaks and announcing a new series. But crunchyroll has become the 3-5 butt end anime joke this season. Thanks for reminding me to cancel sub before payment taken in next few days LOL.

Why? Little production costs maybe? Or a desperate attempt at being artistic?

I don't know, I feel like these 3 minutes animes are just rip off of the anime, "Lucky Star", that is characters saying random things that are meant to be funny.
For something so short, one would think that they'd be capable of coming up with their own unique characters instead of following a template already set by another anime.

Lucky Star is one of my favourite anime, I don't like watching something that tries to copy its format...

I agree Lucky Star was a very great series of random humor. I have watched the series several times when having bad days to get that mood pick me up, I loved the OVA too Kaga-miku and Konata fairy godmother (>^.^)>

I guess too many try to cookie cut their anime into things that did well which is okay, but sometimes it just doesn't work out. I was sad to see how many of these shorts were part of our premium season run >.>

Considering in the end only two standard length non-kids one cour or more anime premiering this season have not been licensed for simulcast, I hope your complaint is with the anime industry back in Japan, not with Crunchyroll.

One of those two actually has yet to premiere, but given that is a sequel of a long running anime series that has never been simulcast, I doubt that is going to change now.
