Even chinese sites made for foreigners to socialise are often down for days.. this is crazy and what's INSANE is that chinasmack has NEVER been banned.. and that site is like the mother land for shameful articles on china.
so frustrated at this.. even vpn's are being banned this is total bullshit
what are your guys views? what if you were here in china and everything you loved online was banned? how would you feel?

I would go play outside and smoke weed and if somebody tries to stop me, they are going to get blown away by my powers.

you're surprised?

China treats their people like crap.
Most of the goods that come from there are cheap and no quality.
Nothing China does surprises me anymore.

A world superpower whose empire is built on cheap.

Pfft, I'd say more like 50% of things I own come from China. The other 50% is Taiwan, Thailand, and the good ol US of A.

China is acting as do all totalitarian governments. Throughout history, controlling (read: limiting) people's access to information has allowed small groups of elite to control the lives of many. It is no coincidence that, here in the West, the Protestant Reformation roughly coincided with the invention of the printing press. Current electronic communication is again revolutionizing people's ability to access information, and is frequently restricted. The good news is that, from an historical perspective, the technology almost always triumphs. The bad news is that there is inevitably a human cost as entrenched groups try to protect their rule. Good luck and be safe!

As for some websites not being blocked, it is possible that they keep changing its IP address. Why would they want to block sites? Control is the main answer. By controlling the flow of information, you control the minds of people. Look at North Korea, they are even worse. If you own a TV or radio, they can only be tuned to state-sponsored stations. Controlling content like this allows the government to keep people from organizing, discussing personal views, and being influenced by people from other countries. Even though they continually try and block content, they fail to block everything they see as "dangerous" to their society.

Pffft, that's China for you

From countless plagiarism ripoffs
(I.e. Burberry -> Buebelly? Random snippets of coding stolen from Nintendo's Super Mario Galaxy for one of their games? An arcade machine using a song from the Final Fantasy series w/o permission? countless examples yes)

to trying to introduce a mainland Chinese guy
(with the obvious Communist background, trying to introduce a "good, morals course" in HK's schools that is a disguise to teach the ways of Communism no less) as governor to Hong Kong

to running over students carrying out a peaceful demonstration with tanks and not even giving two shits about them by covering it up and going "oh, those were terrorists/soldiers (or whatever the fuck), there's no need to worry" to the entire world
(fucking tanks I tell you! tanks!)

to this one story where this poor kid was run over by a truck and no one did shit to help for more than an hour or two

I seriously wonder what's gonna happen to the future at this rate. :/

China is the Western world's sweatshop. Their regressive policy is backed by all so-called "enlightened" Democracies out of sheer convenience and greed, so taking the high and mighty critical route is just sheer hypocrisy. I remember a certain Western country imposing sanctions on a certain Middle-Eastern country and later "liberating" it for far less. What a joke... lol

What would I do? Honestly just give up on the Net and try to make my life bearable through available means. I probably wouldn't be looking to stir up shit with people who value my life so little.

I'm not Chinese, but I love Chinese's culture, history and tradition (except the feet binding) prior to the 19th Century.

I'm a big big fan of traditional cultures and I feel like Westernisation has corrupted a lot of its unique cultural values (not just China but many other countries too).

As for the site banning thing, I'm assuming the government there probably still holds that traditional value of "reputation building" and "saving face", something that's not understandable if you're not aware of Chinese's history.

In Ancient times, families would try to save as much face as possible, they would forbid people to talk about dark family secrets. Anyway, that's just my input... I mean, modern China is such a mess... it's very contrasting to its past filled with rich Literature, Poetry, Art, tradition, customs and values.

Nowadays, it's just trying to catch up with its Western counterparts and destroying the identity of itself.
