If you have trouble watching Neon Genesis Evangelion I'd suggest the Rebuild movies; they're a remake (unless you want to get complicated) that drops a lot of the philosophy in favor of a streamlined story that's much easier to digest.

Rebuild of Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone.
Rebuild of Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance.
Rebuild of Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo.
Rebuild of Evangelion: 4.0 You Can (Not) Watch-Because-It's-Not-Out-Yet.

And if you're still interested after that you can revisit the older series and End of Evangelion if you're inclined.

Rebuild of Evangelion really is a brand new... beast... though.

Yeah so far the rebuild movies are doing a much better job at story telling than the series did for me. However, I am reserving my final judgement on that until the final movie comes out. Evangelion burned me once with its last ending, hopefully it won't do so again haha

Yeah; considering 3.0, all bets are definitely off.

Jumping 14 years into the future and then receiving no explanation upon arrival will throw a guy for a loop.

In general I think Shinji is entirely different in Rebuild than in NGE, but his reputation is so overblown he can't shake it.

I might consider it. I'm just the kind of person who feels they have to watch the original from beginning to end to really have anything to say about it. I did that with Twilight. I hate those books, but I read all 4 because I feel that if you haven't read them then you have no authority to bash on them. I haven't watched the movies, and I'm not sure I want to.

I can't stand those people that say, "I hate____" and when you ask them if they've seen/read it, then say no. I mean, how can you hate something you know pretty much nothing about. I'm fine with, "it sounds like the kind of thing I'm not interested in." But hating something you know nothing about...

I guess it'll be one of those shows where I'll watch it just to say I've watched it. It's not like it's Naruto or Bleach or One Piece where it has a million episodes and it's not worth it to get engaged in them when there are other shows I'm more interested in. Just need to work up the motivation....

Well you can always just watch Rahxephon. Its basically like evangelion only it was much more entertaining haha. The ending sucked but I think I am only one of the few who think that. Gurren Lagann is like eva as well only much funnier and doesn't take itself seriously. Strangely I didn't like the ending to that either haha.

For any other anime you could watch that are thought provoking there's paranoia agent (didn't like haha), Fate/Zero (awesome), and personally berserk (though its really dark). I heard garden of sinners might be one as well. Haven't watched it.

I want to love Naruto and Bleach, if only because they have so many episodes and it would keep me busy for weeks trying to watch them both.

Alas I just don't like them.

You've got me beat; that kind of thinking only got me through the first ~80% of the first Twilight novel.

In that case, at least don't let NGE put you off from watching Rebuild when you're done.

I like that philosophy. I hope you don't mind me coining your phrase haha

Fate/Zero is on my to-watch list. As far as thought provoking goes, I really enjoyed Shin Sekai Yori. Felt kinda like The Giver, which was a pretty good book.

RahXephon reminds me: I can never seem to get into big robot anime. NGE was my first, and it basically just eclipsed everything else in my brain. Anime with smaller mechas is fine (Guilty Crown, etc.) but I can't seem to do big robots that aren't Evas. I think it's partially to do with the mood of those series though; I couldn't get into Eureka 7 much either.

Which is apparently a big robot anime. But I didn't even see enough of it to find that out (heh).

But yeah; I don't think I've watched a single big robot anime besides NGE/Rebuild.

You had to say the one book I did not have a particularly good experience with haha. I'll definitely check out Shin Sekai Yori, looks interesting

Dude here's what you do, and this is if my evangelion lore holds up haha. Since the evas are not really robots, it doesn't count as a mech anime. Instead call it, metal armored beings that little boys and girls like to go inside that fight overgrown aliens that people like to call "angels".................TOTALLY different

There I hope I have solved your problem. Now you can watch gundam and stuff haha.
