Heck, I never knew until recently that fansubs were illegal. but even so, after downloading them, I still don't feel any guilt! Especially with popular series, that have high Blu-ray/DVD sales. Also, the fact that fansubbers take time out of their day to translate anime that they offer for free is admirable.

It's not so admirable when 3/4s of the groups are in fansubbing a series just to increase their epeen. Does the Internet really need 12 groups releasing slightly different versions of Mediocre Fanservice Harem #34862?

And it sucks that you have to help pay bills with your allowance, but I don't feel sorry that you aren't able to afford frivolous entertainment. Theft is still theft.

I don't think I was making anyone feel bad. I'm just pointing out the hubris that a lot of people on this site seem to have. For some reason, they think they are the saviors of the anime industry because they watch shows here. The guys like that are the reason other anime communities laugh at CR.

No, they laugh at CR because they've made a joke out of paying for anime.

Some try to justify piracy by saying they purchase merchandise and that a greater portion of profits from merch sales go to production committees than DVD/BD sales, but I've never seen any evidence to indicate as such.

Here's your evidence. This elaborate greatly on my original contention; you can pirate a show while it's airing, buy it when it's over, and will be giving more to the industry than someone who just streams (nothing wrong with streaming).

No argument there, but I've only encountered one person in all my time online that purchases the release for all the shows they pirated (and as I recall, even they required the series be released in the United States).

That means that while the industry gets more, some productions get nothing from the person that pirated them.

If you hated the anime you pirated, would you still buy it?
A consumer talks with their wallet. If many people don't buy an anime, the creators will maybe try and make something better becaus of that ;)

Precisely. At the end, the same rule of thumb that applies to most forms of entertainment applies to anime; if a decent amount of people enjoy your product, you will make money. Simple as that.

There's a lot of them. Try going to /a/, Animenewnetwork, mal, etc. Unfortunately, some shows will not benefit from the pirate first buy later model. But it ultimately does more good than bad.

The number #1 reason I decided to go legit with CR was because our views count and the industry overseas will have a better idea of whos watching their shows and how many.

I have used illegal sites, but only to test out new anime. And if I like it, I continue the series on crunchyroll of funimation or whatever.

I'd love to quit watching fansubs, but Crunchyroll is still the only streaming site that's worth using.

Hulu has annoying 90 second ads even if you subscribe. Funimation doesn't know how to run a website. And TAN is pretty much in the same boat as Funimation, except with a way smaller catalog; most of which is also on CR.

Then there's the series that don't get licensed for streaming each season. I have no interest in spending an arm and a leg to import a bunch of anime that is unlicensed in the US. Otaku elitists can thumb their noses at me for that, but it's simply something I'm not going to ever do. At that point it's either fansub, or not watch the series.

I'm a pretty strong proponent of copyright law and protection of IP. I'm one of about 5% of people on the internet who really doesn't mind the concept of SOPA passing. I refuse to download any anime and I refuse to illegally stream any dubs.

It's hypocritical of me, and I think that as more and better legal options avail themselves I'll continue to phase them out of my day to day life. But I still think fansubs have their place, and I will watch them relatively guilt free. At least I have adblock installed so those fansubbers aren't making any ill gotten profits from me
