People don't understand a car can be a deadly weapon. I lost two family members near Christmas when I was five. I almost believe you should take a IQ test before getting your license. The amount of people that don't use their blinkers is astounding to say the least. Bicycling can be dangerous due to cars as you said as well. Everyday car companies are trying to make cars safer. One way of that is a seat belt. Which some idiots don't wear. Cars are safer. You can't do much though, if you crash at 60 mph you are going to get hurt.

Where I live, bicycling on the roads would be suicidal, but mountain biking is fun.

Driving is more dangerous. Statistics prove it. Plus the only time you ever hear of a bicyclist being killed in an accident is when they are either hit by a car or they fall off a cliff or something.

Driving, just look at all the women on the road. It's a scary sight.

For the person riding, cycling is more dangerous as you are exposed physically. Wear a helmet! There is a good cycling course called "Effective cycling" which is very useful and half the course is safety training. Check with your local bicycle groups or stores to find it .

I done a lot of cycling, around 8k miles/year for years. It was fun and can be dangerous. A friend was forced off the road into a guardrail, which launched her to the other side of the ravine, breaking her legs. Guardrails may stop cars from going off the road, but they launch bicycle riders into the air.

In both driving and cycling beware of what is going on around you. Driving is more dangerous only if you look at the total numbers, try normalizing the numbers by dividing by number of miles covered and see what the per mile risk is.

Most dangerous ages for bicyclists, 5 and college freshman who ride like they are 5.

lets see, its only dangerous if there are stupid people around who expect you to go around them on a bike. i swear, next person who pulls on to the sidewalk from an entrance from somewhere and expects me to go around them, i am just going to crash into them.

Bicycles are entitled to the entire lane. Read your state laws concerning this. A bicycle sharing a lane with a car is dangerous. Your car is deadly weapon and will be treated as such. However bicyclists are expected to follow the rules of the road too.

I shall conduct an experiment to discover the answer to this question...

I will get in my car and have someone hop on a bicycle, then we will both get up to about 30mph and collide with an inanimate object and I shall record which one of us sustains more injuries.

It would be safer to ride a bicycle if you aren't riding on the road. You would be moving at a slower speed and anything you might run into off the road isn't going to be moving very fast either. The problem with driving is that everybody is moving at such high speeds which makes almost any accident potentially fatal. It might be more dangerous to ride a bike if you're riding on the road though. Get hit by a car going 70 mph and no helmet will save you.

Bikes, but mainly because of the situation of bike/scooters competing against MUCH BIGGER vehicles, and bikers being more exposed to the elements. Sure, more people die in car crashes, but more people drive cars than they do bikes. Also, when bikers do become involved in accidents, they're more likely to become seriously injured and/or die.

They are both dangerous. As long as we have stupid people, people will get injured or die from accidents. You just can't win with any type of transportation. Whether we are riding a bike or motorcycle, walking, driving a car, or traveling in a bus, train, plane, or boat, we will never be safe with idiots around.
