Please tell me these are all full 23 minute episodes and not shorts that are each less than 5 minutes. There seems to be an awful lot of those this season. I don't mind them usually, but I count at least 6 so far and it's kinda disappointing.

Wow, very nicely done Crunchyroll. You've got almost everything I wanted to watch this season. I of course expect Funimation to get Haganai Next, but that's alright. I do hope that Sasami-san@ganbaranai and Tamako Market get picked up by CR as well. I tried subscribing to the Anime Network, but the quality and performance of their streaming service (along with the fact that they're not available on phones/ps3's/etc.) was bad enough to make me unsubscribe within a week.

I shudder to think of what happens when I click the "turn HD on" button with them. Hell, I shudder to think of how bad the streaming player is in standard definition. I've had subscriptions with Funimation, Crunchyroll, The Anime Network, and Hulu and I have to say that I still think that Crunchyroll is the best anime streaming site on the market. Good job guys!

Edit: Further note - I just felt like I had to say this. The streaming quality in CR is so good that I can watch stuff on here in 1080p with better speed / performance than I can watching stuff in 480p on other sites, especially Youtube. I watched the entire Gundam Seed HD Remaster english sub playlist on Bandai's official GundamInfo channel and the speed was TERRIBLE, even though the "HD" Remaster was capped at 480p. As for The Anime Network, their speeds were always sluggish, even in SD, and I swear their premium player did NOT buffer anything at all. And to add insult to injury their servers were down for an entire day when I actually had time to watch. So again kudos to you guys at Crunchyroll, and thanks for being the best in the business. If I could donate even more money to try and get CR more buying power/leverage, I would. Maybe I'll check out the shop some more.

Yes, these three are all standard length series.

Yes, there were a larger number of short series this season. I counted 9 in the list in the "Winter 2013 anime" topic I maintain.

The ones CR doesn't have are Puchimas! Petit Idolmaster (airs every weekday), Line Offline Salaryman (TV Tokyo - airs 3 times per week), and Jigoku Youchien. All 3 have already premiered in Japan.

Frankly, you should probably get used to this. For promoting a 4-panel manga, these short series are no doubt almost as effective as a longer series, and cost a lot less to produce. Since there is little expectation of profiting from DVD/BD sales, the rights holders would also tend to be more liberal with licensing, making them easier for CR to acquire. (I expect these have a very low minimum guarantee, and in some cases, perhaps none at all).

I'll mostlikely give some of them a shot though. Still can't say i'm jumping in my seat from excitement.

You chose not to list your location so how can we know what is available to you??? That said, no shows this season are US only or North America only. Vividred has one of the smallest distribution areas, North America, UK and ZA. Most of the rest are more widely available.

Yes, a lot fewer "North America, UK/Eire, Australia/NZ, South Africa" license, which suggests that Crunchyroll is able to offer region top-ups that are large enough to get Sentai to pick up broader region rights.

And the rights outside the 50%+ area (North and South America, Australia/NZ, UK/Eire, Northern Europe and South Africa) were not limited to just the "everywhere outside Japan" variety ~ Turkey got some attention, both on its own and as part of the Middle East, while Portugal and Spain got some adds as well (which is probably the Spanish / Portuguese subtitling is starting to bear fruit).

And for several series where the UK is locked out, which are probably Anime on Demand series, Ireland was included.

The floor on the MG is the originator's transactions and material delivery costs. The bulk of traditional material delivery costs is mastering the material onto a broadcast tape. It wouldn't be surprising if the material delivery cost side for a short series is equivalent to about two or three episodes of a full length series. If they are willing to do digital delivery for a short (and digital delivery is obviously easier for a 2-3min episode) it might be less than the cost of about one episode of a full length series on tape.

As far as transaction costs, if the international licensor has already done business with Crunchyroll, the transaction costs are much less, since they only have to drop in series-specific details like the delivery timing and regional distribution list into the prior contract, and there is much vetting to be done by the lawyers.

I count a short series as "0.1" of a full series, because it makes the interpretation of series counts easy ~ "14.3" means 14 full length, 3 shorts ~ but its probably not far off being 1/10 the MG as well.

Wow, CR got Vividred huh!? And what is Funi doing lazing around?

Probably saving their cash flow for the Spring when stuff like Attack on Titan and Valvrave are on the menu. Winter and Summer are usually the weaker seasons, so FUNi and Sentai usually just pick through Crunchyroll's offerings after the fact and put their simulcast funds behind the stronger seasons. I expect this pattern to change this Summer though, especially with Sailor Moon coming up.

Yeah, I expect that the license for Sailor Moon will be a dogfight. Somehow, I just hope that Sentai gets Hyperdimension Neptunia this summer and then gets all the VAs that dubs the video games to do their dub(NISA would be a natural choice for it too, but I want that anime dubbed and NISA has yet to dub an anime. I've heard that NISA dubs video games very well though).

Oh I understand all that completely. I'm sure they cost very little to make, especially those with very poor animation. Basically no/little risk to the company, makes good filler, and still promote the manga. However the facts do not make it any less disappointing when we expected a standard length show and get only 5 or less minutes. I don't mind watching a couple of these each season, but 9 is far too many.

You'll probably want to keep an eye on the "Spring 2013 anime" topic for an early heads up for next season. As I stated, I don't see these as diminishing, so I wouldn't be surprised to see 10 next season. While a one or two might be replacing what would have been a standard length anime, I expect most wouldn't have been made at all if the only option was to go full length.

For the "Winter 2013 anime" topic, I including in the comment the episode length if it was less than standard, but I'm thinking of including some type of flag for the short titles in the spring list (possibly ).

VPN FTW!

Seriously, if I lived outside the United States (or Canada), I would probably use a VPN for shows that were not licensed for my region, as at least the publisher gets some compensation then, while they would get none if I resorted to a fansub (or simply didn't watch).

Yeah, the only problem is that if I want a good connection via VPN I need to pay for it, the free ones suffice barely for 720p and I have to wait for it to buffer for a while. Still I want to give my share to the anime business and not only watch pirated stuff. However, using a VPN to do this is just as bad :S

More shows unavailable in the UK. Wow, what a truly shocking, unprecedented event.

Don't worry CR, I'll keep paying THE SAME AS AMERICANS and don't mind getting much less. Really, I don't mind, in fact hurt me some more, I'm enjoying it.

I'm just off to smash my head against a wall for half an hour, so if you'll excuse me...
