Well, my first concern would be how in the world did they get here in 2013? And I hope he/she is not a bigot. I'd just tell them society got worse, that's all. Go travel to the 1970s and take me with you. I want to enjoy the disco era and see all my favorite cartoons and sitcoms when they first air on television. :3

What I would tell the person from the past is very circumstantial. First an assumption:

Since it's understood that I am already aware that the person I'm talking to is from the past, I can assume that I had some involvement in them being here. Otherwise, I would have no inclination to believe the person is from the past, since the most logical conclusion to someone claiming they are from the 1950s is that they are delusional in some way (dressing, acting and talking like they are will only go to corroborate that conclusion).
This rules out the whole "how did you get here?" question, since I would already be aware of that answer.

Next, what I tell the person would depend very much on if their trip to the present was intentional or unintentional. Bottom line: if the person from the past is aware they are in the "future" or not. If they are aware, then they probably are here intentionally, if they are unaware then unintentional.

If he/she is here intentionally, I would give a quick history overview of what has happened since 1950 - moon landing, Kennedy assassination, civil rights movement, fall of the Soviet Union, IT revolution, etc. Then show him/her some of the new technology developed, such as a smartphone, computer, modern cars, etc.

If unintentional, then I would tell the person he/she is in the "future" year is 2013, he/she doesn't have to believe me now, but I'm ready to answer any question he/she may have if I am able to answer it. I would tell him/her I probably don't know what happened to his/her family, but I can probably find out. Then I'd give the person some time to soak it all in.

This would probably be the most surprising thing to people from 1950.
