What exactly do fansubs represent aside from a desire to share anime with those not quite as fortunate to live in Japan? They sure aren't making any money in the original creators' stead by putting work in to translating and simply uploading them.

Are you going to tell me they represent the malicious need to cut down the anime business by shorting companies of their well deserved royalties?

To show off their E-peen by subbing faster than the other groups.

And um, they get money from ad views, download links, and donations (which ironically should have gone to the creators of the shows since they're the one making the material for groups to sub in the first place)
lol thinking sub groups do this for free. How do you think they pay for their expenses?

They do it for free... those donations are to pay for the expenses. I've done scanlating work before (blah blah blah, yes I know, Im evil), and I can tell you, I didn't get paid for my work, nor did anyone else who worked in the group. While I can't speak for every group, trying to portray them as thieves by accepting donations to pay for hosting expenses, is just ridiculous.

Also Arsenette, no one was saying that the companies dont deserve the royalties, so you can put your strawman away.

And before I go... Lililicious is a yuri-fansubbing group whom I have known for years, and last I checked the head of the group actually buys her stuff from Japan and translates it and shares it; most of the stuff we see floating around the internet we wont see in the US because the people responsible for bringing it over (the companies), dont want to.

Anyway, I wont contribute to this thread anymore.

I should mention fansubbing is a big foundation in CR so if you're gonna dis fansubs... well you'd be shittings on CR's face.

^ a different perspective to look at fansubbing.

I won't defend what fansubbers do is right or wrong, that is a different subject matter. I will defend fansubbers because they provide countless hard work and hours to provide content which people have or will take for enjoyment without so much as a thank you.

Space Cow (mod) has mentioned the inner workings of how the anime gets on CR, fansubbing is no different, and I argue there is MORE work in certain areas.

Such areas would be the opening and ending themes, some of you might not find it significant; however, that is still work to be put in. How many of you have wondered, "what the hell is the opening or ending talking(singing) about"? well those get translated.

On a different note, those mangas many of you read on the dark side do you know how much effort it takes to clean those works(well the better ones anyways)? it takes many hours.

People should abstain from talking negative of fansubbing, without fansubbing CR wouldn't be here.

about 1.4 TB currently - though saved on DVD R may be another TB worth or so.

That said... the majority of what I have is either unlicensed and has no legal streaming source, is actually owned on a legit release on DVD or Blu-ray Some things on my drive are there until I can purchase a region unlocked Blu-ray player and pick up some titles from region B as I refuse to pay Aniplex's ridiculous prices. (See Madoka, Monogatari series, potentially Oreimo and hopefully Gurren Lagann BR)

There is some licensed stuff on my drive, yes, I'll admit it - but generally it's to give me a complete series for which I can own only a part of (Looks over at Full Moon, Hikaru no Go and Monster - curses Viz under my breath) and Yawara which Animeigo promised, but failed to deliver on. Oh, and there is Funimation with Kodocha as well. Bought what they released, but... :(

Please keep in mind that I have over 1000 discs of region 1 DVD and/or Blu-ray combined, so it's not as if I'm just an anime pirate

14GB more or less.

I've downloaded Kara no Kyoukai, because $250 for the DVDs or $800 for BD is just crackers.
Hyouka, because it's not licensed and I like looping the whole series for background noise.
Evangelion 3.0 since it's not available yet (I own everything else Evangelion except Death and Rebirth).
And the two Berserk movies and some Canaan episodes, which are licensed and I plan on buying.
I also download new A Certain Scientific Railgun S episodes since I like seeing them in decent quality.

I'd also like to buy Legend of the Galactic Heroes, but Jesus Christ.

I need to become a much more successful individual before I can justify something that excessive.

I was under the impression that most fansub groups distribute via bittorrent, which means no ad views. Perhaps you are confusing them with leach sites, which feed off both the creators and the fansubbers.

Only about 20gb.

I watch everything I can through Crunchyroll and attempt to get the Blu-ray copies if there is an option to.

However if there is a simulcast I was really looking forward to and it is picked up by Funimation instead of Crunchyroll then I will resort to fan-subs since Funimation apparently don't want any streaming money from people outside of the USA.

If I watch a fan-sub though I will usually watch it once and then delete it and buy it when it is released if I really enjoyed it.

Only in a very limited sense at the moment,. You can buy certain older shows off itunes, PSN and Xbox live legally and they are usually dub only.
