Btw I started early-mid season 1. I forget where I picked it up but it was fairly early. Then it was one of my very few simulcasts. I think because I'm enjoying Season 2 so much more having that background I find the wait per week painful.. I love this show so much!

[I'm curious how many fans of S2 actually watched S1 as it was simulcast, as opposed to marathoned it after-the-fact? My guess is most S2 fans watched all of S1 in a few big chunks, and are now watching S2 unfold 20 minutes a week, so they feel it's developing slowly. As I noted before, that complaint (and others, such as there being too many characters) echo the complaints of contemporaneous reviewers of S1, if you go back and look at what people were saying then. I think S2 is developing exactly the same way as S1. Unless it flies off the rails, by the end of the season we should have more insight into the new characters, as well as the many, many, many side characters.

And if something actually develops between the main characters, it will even provide more than the first season

I watched it as a simulcast and loved it almost immediately. It was definitely not what I expected, but that turned out to be a great thing.

I know some people complain about the pacing. I hear the same complaint about Space Brothers and other character driven shows. "Nothing happened" is the common complaint. I disagree. You might prefer things to happen differently, but plenty happens in each episode. In each episode, the characters are developing and growing, though it might not be obvious when you watch the simulcast. This is when marathoning the series has an advantage.

For Chihayfuru, the tournament is an integral part of the show. That's what makes this a sports anime. And it's part of what drives the character's growth. It's what drives tension and suspense. Chihaya without the tournament would be just another slice-of-life anime and it would be poorer for it. I don't find the pacing to be awkward or slow. But then again, I have a different perspective on this show.

I love this show. I would have to in order to watch such a niche part of Japanese culture play out on the screen. Who would have though karuta would be so appealing? So, I'll keep tuning into the simulcast because I can't wait that long for the next episode.

This match is gonna be real good, can't wait for next week.

Hanano being dumbfounded by the photographer flashback was gold. I hope she gets serious about wanting to play Karuta though it'd be nice to see her develop beyond a bench warmer.

Only 13 episodes left! Then what am I going to do? Well...

I am rewatching season one and it is just wonderful yet again... episodes 7-9 yesterday and today after one of my alltime favorites, 6. Once I'm done I will rewatch season 2 again I'm sure...

I hope this match doesn't last 14 episodes. But yeah Sumire's reaction to the flashback was hysterical!

This match... I can think of perfectly good reasons why either Chihaya or Megumu would win. Who's it going to be? Aaah, the wait is going to kill me!

The wait is killing me. I think episode 13 will be one of the best episodes for the season, seeing how elaborate the introduction of the match was.

I really want Chihaya to win. Megumu practically disrespected the whole Misuzawa team (and even Hokuo) by wanting to go to the final match with Fujisaki already. I want Megumu to realize that she's not the only who's trying so hard to become queen. Chihaya has really improved from the first season. It would be nice for Chihaya to be recognized by her peers, that she is someone worthy to be called a rival.

I could read the Japanese but I'm not... as I too enjoy seeing it animated! And love hearing it called out lyrically. Somehow reading the cards in my head just isn't the same... Friday, come!

I know what you mean! I really hope someone translates Chapters 49-88! I always get tempted to read the manga after an episode but because of those missing pages, I don't get to. The only good thing about that is the story isn't spoiled for me. It's really different when you see the action and hear the way the cards are read.
