bump - sorry but ummm todays episode guys?.

I know, for such a passionate base of fans that count down on the guest boards how many days/hours/minutes until the next episode, there's not a lot of discussion here. Yet I always feel like there's lots to discuss.

Like the fact that after going back and watching much of the first season again, it seems clear to me that "Chihaya x Taichi" is never going to happen. It's so obvious now that, despite him being in love with her since elementary school, she was in love with Arata since the second she bumped into him. I have no idea what would change that. The new girl shamelessly blurted out her intentions for Taichi to Chihaya, and her response was more shock that someone would be motivated by something other than karuta. So the people holding out that Sumire will make Chihaya realize Taichi is "the one across the mat from her," I suspect will be disappointed.

Completely unrelated, but I liked that remark Taichi made to Tsuboguchi about how he didn't want to stay in school too long because "that's the one area you can beat Master Suo." Awesome way to insult both of them.

I wouldn't say that Taichi x Chihaya is never going to happen. It may be clear to you, but it's open to interpretation! We're still hoping here.

The status quo between them has been disrupted in recent manga chapters, though not necessarily romance-wise. I have no idea what's going to happen, but something is changing. Though I agree, it doesn't seem like Sumire will be the catalyst to any realization.

I'm doing what I can to NOT be spoiled by the latter scantilated manga so please don't discuss that here

Anyone here who wants to play Karuta, and owns a DS, there is a game:

Touch de Tanoshimu Hyakunin Isshu: DS Shigureden for DS:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgUdZJnco-s

I am playing it, but haven't memorized anything. I am just going on the syllables, but later in the game, the opponents are hitting the cards before the second half (what's on the cards in front of you) is even read.

I'm learning Japanese, so this is a fun way to listen and recognize the characters a lot quicker.

oooo thats pretty cool i would love to play that if only i knew Japanese!

[\spoiler]
Wow this seems really fun and fascinating! Though if I could read the characters, I'd probably buy a set of karuta cards (a Chihayafuru themed one xD), a recording, and play for real. LOL

You mentioned that you're learning Japanese. Are you taking a class? Or self-learning through the game? Because I really really want to play karuta to the point that I want to try memorizing the sounds and characters of the poems. Not sure if it's possible....100 poems.... ;_;

Oh and just curious, do you know if they hit by the decisive syllable for the hardest level? Or is it like half way of the first half of the poem like you said. It'd be really intense if they did one-syllable cards and stuff haha. xD

I am teaching myself with books, and it is taking awhile this way. I can't take a class because I teach 4 nights a week. I would say that it is not that intense if you memorized the poems. They read a lot of the first half of the poem before the computer will try to grab a card.

Would be fun to play for real but I wonder... perhaps the Japanese Cultural Centre plays, I will have to check. The poems sound interesting, must learn them first.

I'm sure there are zillions of websites around but this one seems good, has both the text and readings both standard and lyrical!!! This is in Japanese but there must be some English ones around too. If anyone wants a quick "push this to go through the cards" walkthrough, let me know...

Oh nice! It has translations too!

I found these yesterday. I think I'll work really hard to play. My lifetime goal I guess LOL

Use Google Translate. It translates pretty well to get around! Printable copies of the 100 grabbing cards. I'll probably write the decisive syllables on them like "chiha" on the chihayaburu card to practice xD And laminate them.
http://www.karuta.org/data/image.html

And I found a pdf that lists all poems in romanji organized by deciding syllable and a picture of the corresponding card.

OMG THAT READING CARD LIST.. Printed.. SCORE! That reaally is what I was looking for. Thanks so much also for the cards printout. I don't know if I have the guts to try it but I have it there if I wanted it. Right now I want to see if I can pronounce it. I have a tendency to pronounce Japanese like I would Spanish (my first language) however I put accents where they don't belong.. LOL

Yes please! I definitely need a "push this to go through the cards" walkthrough. LOL

Hmm...preferably lyrical. And maybe a walkthrough for setting it in order or random if that's possible?

I'm such a nerd.. I already booted up Chihayafuru... would go to the tourneys and start listening.. pause it.. run through the pages I printed and find them to try to mimic how they pronounced it..

Tehehehe anyway thanks everyone for sharing links! T-minus 3 days until Episode 3!

NOTE FOR MODS - I NEED THREE (3) IMAGES IN THIS POST TO EXPLAIN THE GAME

So, in the above picture, you choose Random or In Order; NORMAL, LYRICAL or Sound Off and then press Start to get going. For those learning Japanese note that the NORMAL label actually says "reading aloud" and the LYRICAL label actually says "competitive karuta reading aloud" but those don't fit on the image...

This takes you to your first card page which, if random was selected, will be a different card than this:

NOTE: I switched browsers here as I could not get the sound plugin to work in Firefox. It works in Internet Explorer 7 for me.

If sound is on it will play the first verse. Press the Play button to hear the sound again.

Note: you will NOT see the first verse on your card obviously, you need to have memorized the first verse so you recognize the second verse. Hopefully you remembered and took the card!

Press 2nd Verse to see and hear the second verse which will be on your card to confirm you got the right one.

Card count shows the count of cards played so far.

If you know you got the right card and don't need to hear the next verse, hit Next Card.

Hopefully the mods will let me break the two image rule here to say how to do the 2nd verse:

NOTE FOR MODS - I NEED THREE (3) IMAGES IN THIS POST TO EXPLAIN THE GAME

Press commentary for some text commentary on this poem, in Japanese (if you can read it, you don't need these instructions...).

Press Next Card to go to the next card and hear its first verse. Note that the "2nd Verse" button on the first verse page and the "Next Card" button on the second verse page are in the same position so for a normal game you just press that button over and over to go to next card, 2nd verse, next card, 2nd verse...

Press Main Menu if you want to switch to in order, different or no sound, etc...

Have fun! We need to make a Skype Karuta club or something! Except that it is hard to block the other player or grab their cards through Skype so might need some rules modifications... hmm, hmm, hmm...

Wow this is amazing!! Thank you so much! <3 GAH I can't believe you did all of that to teach me (us? LOL). I hope it didn't take too long >_<

Oh my gosh a Skype Karuta Club sounds so much fun! LOLOL We'll need to figure out how that'll work, but the idea is really great. xD

So after browsing the web some more, I found that there's a Karuta Club in San Francisco, an hour from where I live! I so want to go sometime. According to their website, the have two practices in February and March. And there's like a Cherry Blossom Festival Event. Goal: be able to identify all poems by March so I can go the the Festival Event in April. LOL

Here's the advertisement poster from last year. Chihaya! <3

On another note, I rewatched the latest Chihayafuru 2 episode today in honor of Taichi Tuesdays. LOL
