We can all cross our fingers that sales of the original manga are lively enough to convince the publisher to OK another season. That's got to be why Chihaya Furu 2 was greenlit.
I am doing my part! Manga volumes 21 and 22 (with OVA) are pre-ordered for me! I've bought all 20 volumes so far and the fanbook, the Karuta card set, etc. If it says Chihayafuru, I have it :)

But yes, I will be watching volume 21's sales figures very closely. Comes out June 13th with sales figures out approximately one week later.

The manga isn't that expensive, about $6/book. Trouble is that I have to order a bunch of books to make the $30 minimum shipping worth it though I am following enough series (over 30, some come out once a year, some every 3-4 months) that I don't have a problem filling the box. There are other places that use cheaper shipping but it is slower and less reliable. I like to be able to track my packages from Japan but if you just buy one book then the other places would be where to go, places like honto.

Too bad no one has picked it up for English translation here and the ability to pick it up at a bookstore.

Well the bigger issue is what you mentioned: English translation for any of the material. I hope someone (good) gets this show. I don't care if it's never dubbed (anime).. I just want proper English subtitles on either the manga or the anime (preferably both) but the bigger issue will be how much they want for it. I just don't have that kind of cash they want these days. :(

How expensive was the Karuta set? I know we discussed this earlier but wanted to know the general ballpark price for the actual cards they use in the show. (the one with the numbers and the green back).

It is $21 for the official Chihayafuru set and in fact it is set 'A' and only includes 50 cards for playing and 50 for reading. This is enough to play using the CD they include which has one of the readers from the show doing the readings so you can put your CD player on random and play a game. But it only has half the cards. I think they intend to bring out a set B with the other 50.

It is more expensive than non-Chihayafuru sets because it has Chihayafuru character art on all the reading cards and Daddy Bear and Snomaru on the backs of the cards. If you just want some playing cards then you can get a set for $6 or so (just the playing 100, not the reading cards). If you don't want reading cards you can just use a web site for the card readings, waaaaay back in this thread I pointed at a website for readings though a CD is easier to use. You can buy separate reading cards and CDs too if you like.

You can follow other links from the page for other sets. $20-30 seems like it will give you a 100 card set with disc.

For me since I may never actually play Karuta, this set was better for me as I can enjoy the character art and the disc of readings from the show just for what they are even if I never use them properly...

Thanks for that! The one set I want is the one in the show so that may turn out to be cheaper (the plain ones with the number on the side and a plain green back). What's funny is that when I watch the show I listen and call out the numbers.. it's pretty sad actually.. Like Chihayafuru corresponds with #17 card.. LOL so I want to keep that. I did print out the page of the cards and their unique sounds that was provided in a link earlier. I'd love to get a CD and see if I can start memorizing them (since it's written in romanji as well). I'd love if they were geeky enough to provide a book of the 100 poems in English.. I'd read that from cover to cover..

Thus far they have animated it pretty much exactly like it is in the manga so... without spoiling I can say that you will see the results of all the classes in individuals over the next 3 episodes

oooh those Karuta cards are pretty plus a CD from a reader in the anime

I like it and its not too bad of a price including the shipping .....I have the other 100 cards already so I probably just use the reader for game but I want bigger cards ...lol

I agree, I feel the Tournament will end with this season

The book I have features woodblock prints from Hokusai. It's a beautiful book, and worth the $50, imo.

If you want a free and scholarly translation, this site has one of the best:
