You are the usual, people who can hear/speak better than they can read/write Japanese if they are not a native speaker. I am weird in that I read and write Japanese much more than I listen and speak it so I can actually read it more easily. I need to speak it more....

Well I do a blog for a Japanese gameshow and I'm constantly searching through Japanese articles and whatnot over the past few years. I can recognize some kanji just because of sheer repetition. Pronunciation I do okay as I pronounce everything in Spanish (my native tongue) but I have issues with inflections.. UNLIKE Spanish where accents change the meaning of the word.. they just don't exist in Japanese.. so I start putting accents in words and butcher them pretty badly LOL

You can basically think of Japanese as flattened, accent and tone-less Chinese in many respects. That's why there are so many homonyms and why puns are so easy! All the compound kanji words for the most part are borrowed from Chinese but without the tones! Many are still quite similar. Grammar is completely different of course but for nouns they can be very close.

Almost on topic, it would be a very different game of Karuta in another language, if it is possible at all. Japanese has such a rigid set of allowed phonemes that it allows the skilled players to hear the sounds before they are fully voiced.

I was thinking of how this would translate.. which is why I thought it would be best if this series was never dubbed.. I mean as it is they did a great job in translating this in subs. That must have been a nightmare.

Oh as for a Spanish speaker doing Japanese.. just saying it's like Chinese is not helpful LOL It's inherent in our speech patterns to WANT to put accents even if they don't belong. There is no such thing as a "flat" word.. so I put a small emphasis on the first syllable and usually I get it right.

It's like flattened English versions of Spanish, French, Italian... romance language loan words. If you think of it that way you'll probably get what I mean.

And Japanese isn't truly without accents, there are a few but they are fairly subtle.

But I agree. I wouldn't watch a Chihayafuru dub anyways but I think it would be quite a struggle to find people to do good karuta-style readings in English.

Edit: And then book 21, chapter 113 done... happy sad, now I either have to wait 4 more months or I have to add Be Love to the list of monthly magazines I'm buying which is getting more than a bit silly... You think waiting a week for an episode is bad, try months!!!

That's how I currently feel. I've got 3 english translated mangas I'm following: Claymore, D.Gray-Man, & Vampire Knight. I've waited many months; especially, for the next D.Gray-man. 3 months is bad enough but over 6 is annoying.

That's some will power to wait months.. reminds me of the old days though. Kids now are so used to getting stuff so quickly.. we waited years for anything.. and usually really bad bootleg copies of stuff we'd never see here..

That said with the language hpulley.. doesn't work.. "flat" means nothing to me unfortunately but a soft accent or at least emphasis on the first word usually helps when talking to a native Spanish speaker. Even a word that we learned during the Olympics "Nagano".. so many English speakers said "Na GAH no" while Spanish speakers said "Na ga NO".. LOL So I have to put in my head "NAH ga no" even though there is no accent there. Otherwise I'd pronounce it wrong.

The manga that first made me want to learn Japanese 20 years ago is now irregularly bi monthly with tankobons out every year or so. Wait a year, read it in an evening, wait a year. Too long!

Unfortunately I think we are going to have to wait for the next Chihaya anime unless they do one cour for season three. Not enough material yet for two cour in winter 2014 and the story needs more at the moment too, is not at a good spot to end right now.

The more I see Arata play, the more I like his style of attacking his opponents strengths!

Also, I was wondering, but does anyone know what it means to take a card with a "cross"? I know Arata has done that at least once, and I was wondering about that.

As for Chihayafuru English dubs, I don't think it would be the same. As least for me, I think I'm already too used to the Jap voices that anything else now, especially English voices, would just sound too weird.

Taichi actually explained it to Komano way back in Season 1 (though he didn't call it that). The like sounded cards, provided they are all on the same side as the correct card can all be taken out in a row (obviously before your opponent) without it constituting a fault. So for example if there are 3 cards all sounding the same (like Chiha, Chigiri, Chigirio) are all on the same side (meaning that the correct card itself is on the same side as all the other "like" cards (in his side or on the opponents side) you can swipe them all out of the way provided your opponent didn't get the correct card in the time you took out the 2-3 cards. It only works if all are on the same side. If the correct card was on his side but took out the other cards on her side then it's a fault. Does that make sense? So with Shinobu's match he took out 2 cards that sounded the same on her side and on Nishida's match he managed to take out 3 of those like cards on his side before any of them could react. It's good for those 2-3 syllable cards because all you have to do is pounce on the FIRST syllable while your opponent is waiting for the other syllables to react to the correct card. Takes an incredible amount of skill and speed to pull that off. The fact that he managed to do that on Shinobu to her disbelief is exciting

Are you taking into account the OVA coming out in fall? (OVA isn't the same as a movie, right? More like an extra episode?)

I am very worried that if they don't have enough material for another season that Chihayafuru will just disappear I really don't want this show to have the same fate as Pandora Hearts and SkipBeat! (Both animes ended prematurely and crappily, making me seek out the manga for closure...)

That's right. They tend to be longer episodes, often 30 minutes long, sometimes as long as 50 minutes

We had that same worry after the first season, but after about a year's wait, we finally got the second season. Since the manga is still selling well--last I checked--I think the odds may be good we'll get a third season. We'll probably have to wait another year, unfortunately.

Yes, they have an OVA coming out with book 22. Probably just an extra episode, I think I know what it will be. My guess is
. Unless they decide to do a flashback.

I have decided I will wait for book 22 rather than buying Be Love magazine monthly since so little happens in Chihayafuru manga in one chapter that there is no point, at least getting a few chapters at once _something_ has happened by the end of the book, some matches have concluded or something. I have the 2 light novels to tide me over until September, and about 100 Japanese books on my shelf I still haven't read, silly me...

So far Chihayafuru is doing well in manga sales. I think we should consider ourselves lucky to have received season 2 since the disc sales of season 1 were not great (will be interesting to see if the boxed set re-release of season 1 next month by amazon amounts to anything). Season 3 of a show which doesn't sell a lot of discs may be a stretch. Look at Kimi ni Todoke and many others. So I really hope we get a season 3 and think we will but there is no guarantee which is why I am happy to read the manga. It does remind me though, how much I love the anime.

Last night I was reading volume 21 with the season 2 soundtrack on and that helped a little but of course songs with the wrong mood and tone come on and it doesn't quite work... what can you do? Chihayafuru is perfectly suited to anime as most sports manga is with the action but along with the card readings and the sounds I would say even more so, much more so than mahjong in Saki where they add lightning bolts and other stuff to try to make it more interesting when in Chihayafuru, the sounds of karuta are already exciting enough.

The discs sale of Season 1 were relatively good considering the timeslot it aired in Japan. It's not mainstream but I think they use different standards of this kind of anime. As you mentioned, the manga sales spiked up because of the anime. That is one of the goals of any anime, the fact that it happened allowed the studio to consider a second season.

As for season 3, I think it would happen but I'm expecting it to premiere Fall 2014 or maybe 2015 even. Who knows. As long as this gets a season 3, I'll be content

For those who want to buy season 1 amazon.co.jp is having a sale, all 9 volumes as one order for 35 percent off plus it counts as one item for shipping which saves $18 more! Get season 2 box1 at the same time! The more that buy the better chance we have for season 3!
