May not be for everyone but I think it is awesome, one of the best shows of the season! The story, the voice acting, music, animation, just top notch in my opinion. Love the karuta, the romance which simmers just below the surface teasingly all season long.

Of course, I will still watch it but... when I stopped at episode 5 last night I knew what made me so quick to dismiss it the first time.

The dan grades usually go up to 10, all martial arts have them. Many now have kyuu grades too but that is a relatively recent addition.

Higher dan grades are usually honorary, some are only given posthumously.

Gotcha. I'm mostly going off Hikaru no Go where the highest rank I saw mentioned was a 9-dan.

But after some quick googling it looks like they go up to 10 as well.

It was exactly like Hikaru no go. The main themes are: hardship, friendship, and competition. I don't hate these themes but when it is put together into an anime using a non-action game as them medium, it has no appeal to me.

Objectively this anime has hit almost every note.

Subjectively it has missed a lot and I am watching for the Chihaya.

Ah, that makes sense. I agree it is a lot like Hikaru no go, which I loved. I'm surprised that I like this kind of show so much, but I do. I can completely understand that it wouldn't appeal to all. Few things do.

But Karuta has lots of action! Way more than Go! Saki, which I enjoy, is much sillier with lightning bolts and such because Mahjong isn't exactly an action game though since it is really a yuri show hiding a sports anime it is quite watchable...

Pretty soon, you may be watching for the Shinobu, too. xP

But seriously, I think there's 1 thing that Chihayafuru does leagues better than Hikaru no Go, and hpulley nailed it when he said " the romance which simmers just below the surface teasingly all season long." That was really my only complaint about Hikaru no Go aside from an anime ending that (while it left tears in my eyes) left me looking towards the manga for more closure.

That's right!! Animekami, didn't u see in ep 1 in the karuta match between a young Chihaya and Arata, that when Arata swiped the 1st card, it went slicing thru the air at super-sonic speed and got stuck in the wall?!? Somebody's eye could've gotten taken out! I mean, if that's not action, I don't know what is! j/k

I actually watched Saki for the mahjong and not the yuri. Every moment they showed the titles I paused and looked. This of course is a personal thing. Chihayafuru on the other hand I am trying to pay less attention when it is kurata stuff. I am more inclined to look at the relationships that Chihaya will build.

EDIT: I get there is that type of "action" I myself understand it.

I am on episode 5 right now. I will come back and compliment, objectively how good the anime is yet subjectively say it was "okay"

Prepare to watch a very slow burning romance then... the action is in the Karuta the romance is good old Japanese romance just like the poems on the cards and it takes its sweet time. I think it is good that way but some get frustrated by it.

Oh and the manga, OMG, she knows how to kill me with a cliffhanger, 115 has me just hanging on the edge of my seat to know... do I have to say... MANGA SPOILER!
At least it often comes out twice a month now that I'm buying BE LOVE...

I can deal with the romance. I can identify what type of character Chihaya is when it comes to romance.

Same boat; (at least mostly). I'm bummed with the newer episodes because they only give one or two frames to the winning hand and it's gone almost immediately; before they at least gave you a couple seconds. But I'd pause the video and look up the terms and try to decipher the hand and stuff. There's something really fascinating about mahjong.

Then of course you move on to Akagi...

I only play a single-person flash game, but getting a yakuman is still a really amazing feeling.

Anyway, back on topic: I really like the subtleties of the characters in Chihayafuru. And how their motivations knit together and influence one another. You really see them grow as individuals, which is kind of rare I think; and rewarding.
