So first off if this topic has already been discussed I apologize I searched just general gaming forums, and this being a general discussion and all, either way sorry if it has.

On to the topic so recently its been brought up that Sony has put a patent plan in that pretty much could take out the used part of video games, or even sharing with your friends. This new patent, http://www.gamespot.com/news/sony-patents-tech-to-block-used-games-6401992, is a killer if put to actual use for companies like gamestop and other stores that sell and buy used games. While you will still be able to play older games used the ones that come out for newer systems would have this restriction IF the patent is applied and used.
My thoughts on this are grave myself I am a cheapazoid by nature lol. If I do buy something new its something I just cant wait an entire year to get my hands on the game of the year edition for around 30 bucks and that stuff includes all the dl stuff and whatnot. Other then that I love to buy a used game for 15 bucks off the original price if its a new game or even more if its older. While this whole patent may not be applied for a while it might not even take place in the time that the new systems come out which would mean we wouldn't have to worry until the next big update. But please lets hear your opinions especially if you think its just a huge overreaction and nothing will happen soon.

I can just foresee games going the way of emulation faster and/or systems being sold along with connecting accounts.

I honestly think the gaming industry is just being the VHS of the modern era (ie - "VHS is going to kill movie and TV sales")

This is something that isn't really going to be implemented. It would kill whoever did it long before it would kill Gamestop and other places. It's more so just for Online Passes and such.

Sony said in a content business like the games industry, it is "vital" to redistribute a portion of the proceeds from sales to developers, who do not see a dime from secondhand sales. This statement right here is what makes it more of a reality then just adding it to online passes, they could seriously increase the amount of games being made for their systems if they did this as well by offering the companies that make them more money.

Although I can totally relate to why they are doing this I just can't support it. I mean paying $65 for a brand new game? Now if they would lower prices for games back down to the last generation standard of $50 I would say go ahead. But I know I can't afford anymore to pay this much for games. That's why I like buying used so much. It's actually at a affordable price. So if Sony goes through with this (which I'm guessing they are) I am definitely not going to give them a dime of my money.

It would damage new game sales, people trade in their games because they can't afford the mountain of new games we get yearly. Whoever implemented this would definitely be shooting themselves in the foot.

Thats another side of this story as well if sony happens to implement this plan it would leave microsoft open to reap in some benefits from people who want used games.

Its things like these, that keep pushing me away from the gaming industry. The more we go into the future, the more I feel going back to previous gaming consoles. All these efforts to prevent piracy are unnecessarily burdening consumers. I am against piracy but these efforts all feel unprofessional and don't show the consumers that you care about them.

It doesn't really bother me if used games are blocked on the next gen of consoles. Sure some games may be too expensive, but then I just won't buy them or I will wait to see if they go on sale.

I have bought a lot of used games (mostly old games I never saw in stores on ps2/ps1) but I can see the devs point of view because they are losing a lot money because a large number of people will only buy used games. I can't fault people for wanting to save some money, we all want to to do that.

I think if digital game prices were a lot lower on consoles, then maybe people would turn to that option and used games wouldn't be as much of an issue.

OP gave somewhat of an outdated article. Because sony addressed it in a different article that they don't plan on blocking used games, at least for the PS4. But that being said, it was stated that used games WOULD PLAY on the PS4. The patent might had some restrictions as far as used games go but they won't entirely block it.

It will cause problems with the public and really hurt the console market when the companies try to lock down used games.
While it won't really effect me but I know many it would.

My take on it is that not letting people play used games on their consoles will mean fewer people will be buying said consoles in the first place. Although I can afford to buy all these games new now, they mostly suck or don't last very long, making me wonder why I wasted $60 for a game that lasts 4-12 hours with little to no replay. So when I do get a game, I don't mind waiting a few months or even years to let the price come down first.

They really should lower the price if they're going to do this, say no higher than $40, maybe $50 for a AAA title (call of duty, madden, etc). Otherwise I have a feeling Gamestop (and probably Best Buy) won't carry the new consoles or games, which will hurt Microsoft and Sony in the long run.

My guess is that Sony/MS will do something where you have to pay a small fee to play the game if you didn't buy it new (kind of like what EA did with some of their games that came with extra content if you bought it new, but had to pay for it if you got the game used). But if they go this route, I have a feeling people will still not buy the new systems because they'll probably have to pay twice for the game, once from Gamestop or Ebay, then once again to Sony/MS to play it. Unless the "fee" is small, like $5, and is one time only, I don't think too many players will be won over by this approach either.
