So, i was looking for one, but it seems there's no thread discussing solely anime movies yet. So which anime movies have you watched recently/ liked? which ones do you recommend?

I just watched an older classic one called Sword of the Stranger by Bones. It starts out with some good swordplay from the start while the credits roll and goes into some great animation laying down the character development and back story.A boy and his dog are in hiding in Japan from mercenaries sent by the Emporer of China.Just as they are about to apprehend him, a stranger appears and saves the boy and his dog. After hiring the stranger to protect and accompany him the two embark on a journey to find the monestary he was forced to flee from.Once there they are encountered by the mercenaries again and then ensues some of the bloodiest and most badassed swordfighting I've seen in an anime. The plot gets better and better as it progresses and the animation is worthy of Studio Bones reputation. If you like samurai genre with absoutely awsome dueling this is one to watch.

Anyone see Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva? That one was a great adaptation; one the few video game licensed movies that was actually good. I say that alone is worth a look-see.

I couldn't agree more. My favourite ghibli! I got this purely on a whim, after watching spirited away, for no more than a £5. Never regretted it, in fact it was what lead me to find most of the anime I now have or watch. Simply one of the best anime films & ghibli films to date. |

Howl is a very good anime, my favorite Miyazaki, although I enjoyed all of the Miyazaki films; except Ponyo.
I stumbled upon Venus Wars a week or so ago. It was pretty good. I guess some guy uploads old anime movies to youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwiwQLs9xMw |

Summer Wars is a recent favorite.
There's a good number of anime movies that are spinoffs or adaptations of an existing franchise. Unfortunately, some of these are only enjoyable if you're already a fan, and others try to condense a huge amount of comics or TV episodes into a feature film. |

I just watched The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya and I have to say that I enjoyed it more than the entire 2 seasons of Haruhi that preceded the movie.
The tone of the movie is completely different of that of the TV series (except for small bits throughout the movie), its part mystery, thriller, suspense and the soundtrack is wonderful in setting the atmosphere that surrounds the characters: http://youtu.be/9iQDdsteSr0 However I really recommend watching the TV series first or reading the novels before seeing the movie, as the film draws and builds upon past events and characters in the series. It's a little under 3 hours long but I have to say that I enjoyed every minute of it. |

Especially the twist near the end, simply one of the darkest moments in cinema/films. I hope we get more Haruhi after this, be it tv or film. Just a shame to get the bluray version I had to order it from USA because they axed it here in the uk. It does beg the question, what world is better: a world where anything is possible but you have to maintain a normality to it before it collapses in on itself or a world where you remember the 1st world but nothing supernatural or unordinary happens anymore. |

I love anime movies. I have a number of them as my favorite movies, but I'll highly recommend *anything* by Satoshi Kon: Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Paprika, or Tokyo Godfathers.
Summer Wars and The Girl That Lept Through Time are also quite good. |

My favorite anime movie of all time. - of course I recommend to watch the first 2 seasons first in order to appreciate it. I originally ordered my Bluray from Hong Kong and it took forever for Bandai to release it here...of course they shortly became defunct. Such a choice - I always compare it to a cross between "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Back to the Future Part 2" - I could talk more about it but I am sure it will deserve its own thread if it was not created along time ago. I also recommend Howl's Moving Castle - a beautiful Ghibli that I both love in subbed and dubbed. Others: Sprited Away, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, The Evangelion Rebuilds (once again as with Suzumiya, I recommend seeing the first series and movies before these as I better appreciated it.) |

Most recent movie I watched was Hotarubi no Mori e. Beyond that there's a lot of Ghibli movies that are always classic viewings.
And Berserk Golden Arc II was really good. |
