That's what the Navy was for. Kind of sad when the military won't even take you on.

I would love to live in Japan, if only for a year or so. Sometimes I think my life could really use an emptying of my knowledge cup so I can fill it with another perspective.

It is a goal of mine to go there as a language teacher one day, when I'm done with university, so I guess we'll see.

I would love to be able to live in Japan. I have always wanted to go there and learn more about the people and culture first hand rather then simply with a book...... Plus I would love to date a Japanese girl. (though I highly doubt any would give me the time of day)

Been to Japan more specifically Tokyo 7 times to visit my relatives. It's a great place and I would love to live there for a certain amount of time but not forever since I love the USA where I was born!

any tips living in Japan? I just moved to yuki Ibaraki and its been pretty rough. I have almost 0 Japanese so the only people I have been talking to are internet people and skypeing with my mom and sisters. I hope things get better when work start. Also you cant watch crunchyroll in Japan

i'm sorry i didn't see this sooner, i would have replied sooner. just hang in there. it took a good while before i made some friends, or felt adjusted. you would prolly go through similar things simply living in a different city in your home country. when work starts, you will make friends though work. please update us on how you are doing? i hope you are doing well. i also walked in with minimal japanese (i could only say things like, "i like to go skiing" or some useless crap like that).

things are pretty good now. I'm mainly conversing with the English teachers and a few students who also share the same interest as me. I'm a card gamer. I still have almost zero Japanese but I will say this, I know more Japanese now then I did back in the States

I just want to know one thing... how does someone, let alone a whole family, just up and leave the US and move to Japan?

I am currently reading this:

www.amazon.com/Getting-Genki-Japan-Adventures-Misadventures/dp/4805311762/

I would love to know how an entire family from Maine can just move right into Tokyo. Like isn't there immigration and stuff like that?

That said, I hate my currently 9-5 job (extremely hostile work environment) and I am highly educated (I also teach Computer Science college courses part time at night ). I am kind of at the point where I just want to pack everything up, and move as far away from my current life as possible. But, there is always the job issue and money. Need to get something else before leaving what you currently got.

Getting the right visa to be in Japan long enough to live there without trouble is the most difficult part. Without a study or work visa you will probably have a hard time staying long term in Japan (especially since you already have a family in America). Both of these visas require certificates of eligibility from the Japanese government (a consulate near you or the embassy can take care of these).

You would need to find a job in Japan before you moved there (it would make it extremely easy to live there). Work (hours, pay, etc.) aren't much better than here. I've worked with a few Japanese companies that come to the states, and I can say that Japanese people are FAR more serious about their jobs than most people in America are. Without any real background in the Japanese language, however, your job options are pretty limited. There are options out there for you if you look for them, though.
