I'm really looking forward to this. Ghost in the Shell is one of the shows that first sucked me into anime. It's been a long time since I've watched any though, so now I must decide whether or not to take the time to track down and watch the prior movies and SAC to get me even more in the mood and ready for Arise.

Me too!

That's a commercial for surface. I am pretty sure that has anything to do with the plot, but I was cool.

It was nice to see the animation quality though.

But...

They could also lose the generic evil robotic cannon fodder henchmen, but whatever.

I think I'm going to have to wipe my mind and pretend this isn't GitS. Otherwise the subtle feeling that everything about it is just slightly wrong is going to ruin it for me when it looks like a perfectly decent set of OVAs otherwise.

The first film came out earlier on BD today. Pretty good stuff although fan service was more than I expected. The animation felt a little different but this sure gave me a big smile to my face today.

It was pretty good but not amazing. I think the animation is a step down from other iterations, but it still feels like GITS, and that's all I can hope for.

No explicit spoilers, but I do reference some things.

I have a few gripes, but most are from comparing Arise to SAC. And I'm left wanting more, so I liked it.

If I'm going to criticize the animation I have to break it into three categories: character design, world design, and secondary animation (the movement/actions that happen between keyframes). I thought the character designs were flat, the world designs were fairly off the charts, and that secondary animation was arguably worse than SAC.

But SAC had literally legendary secondary animation, so worse in this case doesn't exactly mean terrible.

My biggest gripe is the level of technology. I loved the gritty realism of SAC technology, but the stuff in Arise felt much more like shounen-brand science fiction (especially with the dreadlock cyborg firing electric pulses from his arm and the mobile mines made up like dolls for no explicable reason). Nothing like that was in SAC, which comes after Arise.

tl;dr This is futuristic fantasy, not legit cyberpunk science fiction like the rest of GitS.

Fanservice... Motoko's boss's cleavage was absurd. I thought that her character design was pretty atrocious for the GitS universe (even given Motoko's dresscode), along with the dreadlock cyborg. Motoko running through the rain with a pistol in her underwear was contrived as hell, but still fit with her character which in turn fits with the world.

I enjoyed seeing a visualization of Motoko analyzing information within her cyberbrain. And I won't complain about her doing it naked in the shower; on a related note I didn't have any problem believing she was Motoko even with the new character design. At least for me it didn't stand out. Same with the rest of the main cast we've seen so far.

I also freaking loved that it was an hour long. I wish more televised anime would consider using 1-hour time slots instead of 30 minutes, it gives more time to get involved with what's happening in the world without being interrupted by OP/ED credit sequences. For example, Attack on Titan would be an amazingly good once-a-month one-hour OVA.

Not commenting on the plot; it was rushed but they only had an hour, and there was definitely worse in SAC 2nd GiG.

PS: Motoko made some crazy funny faces in this scene:

Yeah i noticed the Motoko faces too

Great write-up btw. I agree with everything said. Also I noticed the score was more like the movies and less like the series. I prefer the series more energetic score rather than the creepy one present in this series, and in the original GITS movie, and innocence etc.

That's an interesting thing to note.

I really need to train myself to pay attention to soundtracks; I'm more or less completely oblivious to them.

Just finished it myself. I enjoyed it but as has been said, was hard going into it, being a prequel, after you have watched the shows and movies that come afterwards. There are some minor changes done to the backstory/plot that don't line up precisely with what you see and hear in SAC or the movies and that is something that I noticed. They weren't a show stopper for me though.

The character designs were well done I think, some of them were radically different but for the most part was a fun new way to see the characters. The only character that I really didn't like the look of, which we have yet to really see either, is Saito. I'm simply basing that on the OP. The rest of the characters look great, I especially like Batou's look, subtly different and the major's, very different. They are not better or worse than the designs from the other series/movies in the franchise in my opinion but are just a new fun way to see them.

The music was fairly good. Wasn't anything amazing though in my opinion. Nothing really stood out to me, maybe after another viewing I'll pick up on it more.

The animation seemed OK to me. I don't have any gripes about it.

In regard to the supposed fan service, personally I wouldn't consider this fan service as we have come to know it in modern anime. I really didn't even notice it as such. Yes there are some parts that contain nudity or etc but it's never flaunted or even focused on, when those scenes come up they are natural. When someone talks about fan service in this OVA I'm afraid people will think of HOTD. This is no where even in the same galaxy or hell the same universe, the same multi-verse even, as that.

The setting and overall "feel" of the world was, imo, still GiTS but with some differences. It does feel less "cyberpunk" to a degree and more modern futurist. It hasn't lost it entirely, not by a long stretch, but it's just less "gritty" feeling than the other series/movies.

Overall I think this was a decent start to a new chapter in the GiTS franchise, especially when you consider how astronomically high the bar is set for anything GiTS. Looking forward to the next one.

I was really bummed that they changed Motoko's backstory. I don't even rightly understand what she was talking about in Ghost Pain, I'll need to rewatch that part again. But I liked her story from SAC 2nd GiG a whole lot more.

I was hoping it might've been an effect of the virus in Ghost Pain but that doesn't seem likely.
