I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say this is more of a prequel to the movie than it is SAC

Arise Motoko:

Movie Motoko:

SAC Motoko:

In SAC she was much more sexualized than she was in the original movie. In the original movie, she was much more "tomboyish" very similar to how she seems so far in Arise.

In SAC her character's look was designed after the look of the major in the original manga and the manga is what the original movie is based on. For whatever reason they decided to change the look of the Major in the movie from what she looks like in the manga. Little round about there for ya. Basically I don't think you can take into account the Major's looks in trying to decide whether this is a prequel to the movie or SAC. ;-)

You're right about not being able to base things solely off her looks, however. In Arise her character comes off as more of a younger version of the Kusanagi we witnessed in the movie and not so much from SAC.

More specifically her origins, in the movie that was never really addressed leaving room for this new bit of information regarding her past.

In SAC, her origins were addressed and are drastically different than what we've witnessed so far with Arise.

For what it's worth, I'm actually more inclined to believe Arise is an alternate universe, or telling of the GiTS and has no connection to prior versions.

Agreed on that point unless something happens that says otherwise.

So watching Arise, has me watching the SAC seasons again. Finished the first season last night, still just as good as when I first viewed it.

I just read the first chapters of Arise manga. I have to say I'm not impressed at all by the changes or by the story. It just doesn't fit the original manga or the movies. AFAIR Motoko was not called Major for her military degree but because of her skills on the battlefield. Also her comment about "everyone wishing her death" was just so cheap. I felt like I would read about some common manga hero, not stoic Motoko facing all the missions with poker face and tactical approach. I will go and see the anime version now. But man... I'm not impressed. I'm a fan of the series, I own all the movies and comic books except SSS and damn... this just doesn't feel right to remake series this way.

... however first OVA seems pretty interesting. Maybe it won't be as bad as I initially thought after reading the first manga chapters. Except music being rather dull and opening ugly this might just be an OK show.

Meant to do a little write up here a couple of weeks ago. Let's see if I can still remember those impressions.

I saw the first two OVAs in a local theater, thanks to Funi's promotion via Tugg. I've got to say though, that I was disappointed and will probably pass on the chance if they do this again for the second two OVAs.

I did like seeing a younger Motoko, and I liked the ED to the first episode, but that was about it. The stories in each episode felt "small"--and while that doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing, especially when you're not doing a full length movie, there was a general sense of plodding through the motions. And what was going on wasn't all that complicated, but it was presented as if it was--to make it more mysterious and suspenseful I guess, but that just ended up being confusing. Even the creators knew they'd managed to mess it up sufficiently that they gave us a long expository debriefing to ensure we understood what had gone down. Dull. Unsatisfying.

For GiTs fans (and, lets face it, that's who these were made for), I guess the main treat was supposed to be seeing how the Section 9 team came together, even though some team members were essentially in cameo roles. I'm not fangirly enough to appreciate that without any other substance, and thus was disappointed.

Conclusion--pretty much a rip-off. Grab the fans' money (because they are fans and will shell out for tickets or buy discs just because); give them crap.

I will not be seeking out parts 3 and 4.

I saw the third movie. Imo, the weakest one so far with more focus on Mokoto and her interpersonal relationship with a new character named Akira. The final climax part felt cheesy although I did like the chemistry between them considering they are showing human traits. In fact...throughout the movie, there were many other human behaviors between other cyborgs and in the GITS world, that's quite something.

Final movie to come soon...

Ghost in the Shell: Arise Ghost Tears # 3

More of a laid back EP focusing more on implanting thoughts into cyborgs and using prosthetics as bombs! Section 9 is still nor complete and Mokoto wants Togusa to join!

I think the Major in Arise looks better. This is probably a reboot sequel, kinda like what they did with Lens Flares in Space (aka Star Trek)

It's a prequal series so i guess they wanted to make her look younger. Her look is based on the original film and some elements seem to be mixed in from SAC. I like the look being a fan of the film and i think it's good to show her seeming younger in a different body.

The third part was entertaining a lot less action than part 2 but i think the storyline was better getting into what GitS is all about looking at the line between human and machine and what the soul is. The Major gets some interesting development and Togusa finally appears the last piece of the puzzle. Looking forward to the final part looks like we'll finally get some black bodysuit action from Matoko XD.

#3 wasn't as good as #2, but I still really liked it. It was interesting seeing Motoko act like a lover. She's the kind of character who guards her emotions well, so it's always a trip experiencing new dimensions of her personality. I guess exploring her character is kind of the whole point of Arise to begin with, isn't it?

Hopefully we get more GitS after the 4th movie. I need more!
