well i'm an exchange student in japan...at first it was quite hard because i don't know much about japanese..n i only started to learn japanese like 2 months ago before i came here..luckilly my host father can understand english quite well..n he helped me a lot in improving my japanese ^^

hmm honestly most people here in japan can't speak english fluently n their english sounds more like 'japanese'..so it's better to learn the language first before u're planning to stay in japan.

So yes.

This question is stupid.

Jay, you should stop being so negative.

And hey, people move Canada, and they have no idea how to speak English. Take most people's parents as an example. So why not in Japan?

Its possible several people I know have a cursory knowledge of Japanese at best. I wouldn't recommend it, as Kenshin has stated kana would be the absolute minimum to know, with some kanji being helpful.

In Tokyo, most Japanese know some very basic Japanese, those who spend more time around foreigners have a better grasp of it obviously. If you don't have a degree, or existing friends over here it will be very tough and I doubt it would be the experience you were looking for.

But that's your choice, so if your interested, apply for a working holiday visa (your Australian and you don't have a degree yeah?), and look for an eikawa recruiting in Aus, (Aeon, Berlitz, Gaba, though stay away from Nova they are going down the tube)

My uncle did it. He moved there for about a year and didn't know very much Japanese, only a few phrases. He was a professor and taught English class over there. He learned it more over time though naturally.

Yeah, that's the way to go. For the rest of us, you could have a person talk for you or just gradually decipher the language, though that would take a while.

That's like watching Naruto and not knowing who Naruto is.

Possible, but hard.
