I'm not accusing the media of being complete liars, Brainwashing, or such things. I just wanted to point out that bad news is mostly reported on a sort of loop, so that it gets stuck in our heads. Good news on the other hand seems hard to find. So is the world getting worst despite the new technologies or our constant scientifical discoveries? Or are such thoughts (world is bad) just completely biased because we mostly see bad things happen? I don't know if i made myself clear...but i would like to hear your thoughts.

Everyone Loves a Good Train Wreck.
We just can't look away.

People love to see 'bad' things, and the media.
The media profits off of the ratings.

I understand perfectly what you're trying to say and I agree very strongly.

Journalism has become this formulated thing where they continually talk about:
- the murder/rape of someone
- robbery/drugs
- natural disasters

Sure, if there are news about an escaped convict, that is understandable, but do we really need to know someone got killed beside a lake every day or someone fell from a rooftop and died.

They also tend to focus on the bad things to draw the common people's attention, but I just don't fall for that.
For example, I'm a big fan of Christina Aguilera, I follow every news article on her and watched every live performances she has done. And the media paints her as this mean, evil and clumsy artist... they reported on things such as when she flubbed the National Anthem or when fell down at one of her performances. But I go to her fansites and they reported a lot of positive news on her such as when she went to Haiti to feed children or when she did charity works for CNN during the Hurricane disasters. I also watched her interviews, she just seems very real and down to earth to me.

I've always been a critical thinker so that's maybe the reason why I can pinpoint the flaws of current media. I read comments on gossip sites sometimes, and I truly pity those users who buy into every story the media come up with.

Dude, the world is a lot worse than how the media makes it seems. Here's a disturbing fact for you: in 2011, there was a rape every six minutes. A murder every forty minutes. Sounds bad? Yes. It is. Are all of these reported? Nope. And they shouldn't is in my opinion, but such be life.

I always thought media made things sound worse than they actually are.
The goal is to sell, and the best way reporters sell is exaggerating the stories and even striking fear into ignorant people. Jumping on murders as soon as possible, making it sound like the worst thing to happen in history.
Whether or not the world is as bad as the media makes it out is probably up for debate, but I think the media just worsens situations. And, of course, sometimes they just report the stupidest of things, so perhaps they do a little of both. Making things sound worse and better, I mean.

Its like others have said, the media wants to make money just like everyone else on the face of the planet. They try to exaggerate stories at times and put out whatever stimulates the largest audience possible, which happens to be tragedies and the problems of the world. Sad to say, but people just don't care about things like the Da Vinci robot because they aren't interested in the good things in life. They tend to look at the negatives as sort of a change from the normal ironically. Its not completely the media's fault for being pretty corrupt and biased, I'd say a good deal of it originates from the nature of humans to see the negatives of things since after all, it is easier to see what you could have instead of what you do have.

To put it simply, we have paramedics and EMTs out there on a daily basis around the clock saving peoples lives. We rarely if at all hear about these people's contributions to our society.... until they just so happen to screw up like anyone else and suddenly it's national news. Why is this? Because the media outlets can't sell good news. Our current sensationalist media loves to throw how messed up our society is in our face day after day because people will watch it, thus upping their ratings and paychecks.

The world is no better or worse than it was 40 years ago. The difference is because of the internet we hear and see so much more of the violence. if you compare stats from then to now taking into account the size of the population the numbers really are about the same. want an example? go look into the murderer Albert Fish. Depression era killer. taunted the police and the family of a girl he killed with letters for years. that was years before the zodiac killer of Northern California.

There are much worse things which media doesn't show, Conversely, there are also extremely noble things that people have done. There are ignorant people who are ashamed of being humans. That's foolish. People aren't only bad. They have redeeming qualities as well.

I think that new technology and new scientific discoveries are awesome and make the world easier by fixing problems medical related and updating old technology so we can advance to something bigger, but as far as it exactly making the world better no if you mean in a way such as human activities in the world. Humans will always and forever have the power to down or make other humans feel a certain why. This question strongly contridicts what I just wrote, making me contridict my own opinion lol. You just have to think and understand the difference. I guess to break it down (Smarts and power too destroy at anytime).

Honestly I think the world is better now than it really ever has been. Yeah, it may not seem so, but that's because you can see all the bad that happens with ease thanks to the internet and the media. If you crack open a history book or take a class you can quickly see that things used to suck and suck bad back in the old times.

Example: Thanks to fiction (as much as I love it, it is guilty) we like to think of eras such as medieval times as fairly romantic periods with knights, damsels and chivalrous heroes who save the day. In reality... there was poverty, disease, war, rape, slavery, even harsher class systems and nobody gave a damn about you if you weren't a noble. Now some of the aforementioned still exist today, that is true, however we now classify them as problems that need to be solved whereas then, they were kinda considered the norm and nobody really cared much to stop it.
