The world....is it as bad as the media makes it seem? |
The media feeds on the negative part of reality.

Humans just naturally care more about problems. My sister is happy with her marriage? Whatevs, good for her. My sister is unhappy with her marriage? Suddenly, the issue of her marriage is a lot more important to me. I want to know what's wrong and if she's going to need support.
Being geared more toward negative events has its good side and bad side. |

"fear makes the wolf look bigger" I think this fits perfectly for people's outlook in general... maybe not for the consumerism, but definitely for restricting them from taking action themselves when it comes to something happening, this way we're all confined to the corners of our house, filled with items and tv channels that have us believe we are well off or lucky to have access to when they're just useless attachments making you diverge from real importance and your real self. It also divides us greatly by turning us against each other in any way possible while the real enemy watches it happen. mainstream media is a puppet show, I don't need to be told what to think or how to behave, all I need is the truth. exactly even things like racism were engineered by the people with power back in the day. The difficulty is that the media is almost impossible to escape unless you want to live like a hermit. so you just have to best choose what to believe and not. |

Reality is worse than is being reported (but not in the ways that are being reported).
And it always has been. Media doesn't reflect the world. At BEST it interprets it... giving you bits and pieces that someone else thinks is important/entertaining. At WORST it obscures it... giving you bits and pieces that someone else thinks will distract/manipulate. You're better off picking up a non-fiction book on something--ANYTHING--that strikes you as interesting. Or a fiction book by an author who crafts seriously well-thought out characters. You'll learn more about the world in the long run. |

I know that being inundated with all the negativity in the media can make a person cynical. I know that I began to feel that way about people and the world when I started becoming aware and caring about the issues in the world around me. Calling the reporting done by your local tv station "news" is a bit of a stretch. The media, first and foremost, is a business for profit. They sensationalize everything because that is what makes them the most money. Local news is nothing but info-tainment. Seriously, how much information can you present in only 30 seconds? I don't know where you all are from, but recently my faith in people was greatly renewed. On December 14th, my parent's home burned to the ground and they lost everything they own. All of their neighbors and even many people across town who didn't even know my parents have come forward to help and support them. I can't tell you how much of a relief it has been. Within days my parents had all the necessities they needed: bags and bags of clothes a washer and dryer, refrigerator, furniture, even the little necessities you don't think about like toiletries and toilet-paper. One of the neighbors is even feeding and taking care of their dog. If you want to see and here the good "news" get out and talk to people or volunteer.

In my 2 cent opinion, the media reports on what is convenient and emotionally charged in order to keep your attention for the ads or to push an agenda. For a change of pace, try foreign news services instead for a while. At least the spin will be different.

I think the world is better. I know we all thing the world was better before but technology has defininitely improved things on all levels, granted there are still places that things are bad. Look back through history and take away the romantizism. how bad was the world when Caligula was emperor. How bad was the world when the Donner Party was stranded in the middle of the Rocky Mountains. How bad was the world when The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. How bad was the world when the Americans were about to invade Japan. Pick a time, anytime, it was bad but there was also good and there was hope and thats how we got to today and thats how we will get to tomorow.
