like you said. the media only shows bad thing mainly. so i think that lack of seeing anything positive leads us to believe that the world is a worse place than it really is. i think it sucks, but not as bad as the media makes it seem

The world is filled with dark things. But, you can still find the bright side of it, so long as you have a sense of humor. xD
Per example, many might think certain countries are poor, dirty, terrible...... but, they're looking that at one perspective. In another person's eyes, it's probably the most beautiful place on Earth, despite the bad things that go on there. No place is ever really safe or clean anyways, lol.

I didnt read all of the post but humans want to have the impression they are doing better then others, they want to think their lives are fulfilling and meaningful as well as have a sense of being successful. So when they see all this negative stuff going on in the world it creates a sense of things could be worse off then what it is.

This is why the media is so successful. If they only aired positive stuff and the great deeds others are doing then we would sit and wonder why cant I go outside and help others instead of sitting here watching anime/posting in forums with my free time and in turn they would no longer continue to watch the news.

However in my opinion the world is far worse then we could even imagine..

To put it simply, we have paramedics and EMTs out there on a daily basis around the clock saving peoples lives. We rarely if at all hear about these people's contributions to our society.... until they just so happen to screw up like anyone else and suddenly it's national news. Why is this? Because the media outlets can't sell good news. Our current sensationalist media loves to throw how messed up our society is in our face day after day because people will watch it, thus upping their ratings and paychecks.

People don't go to hospital/clinic much as they should be. Why? The bills are expensive. And, they "mostly" being attend by paramedics/emts when everything is way too late or way too painful. 911 calls are not free. Ambulance rides are not free.

Did you know that in the Far East, people pay their doctors when they're healthy? When they're sick, they don't have to pay. So basically, they end up paying for what they want, not what they don't want. We've got it all ass-backwards, here.

i wasnt talking about people not seeking medical attention or the price of hospital visits and etc. my point was that good news (normal happenings) dont sell as well as some patient dying of negligence.

I cited those numbers as only a single example of why the world is worse than the media reports. There are many more. On top of that, 0.0043% chance of being murdered, that's 0.0043% higher than it should be, but that's not the point. OP asked if the world is as bad as the media makes it seems, and the answer is that the world is actually worse.

If you factor in the rest of the world, it only reinforces my point. The world is a horrible place, but it is also a very good place.

My point was that there is little reason to live in fear after reading those statistics. Given agira's reaction, I'd say it's a good example of making the world (or at least the United States) seem worse than it really is, not the other way around.

Historically, humanity is in the most peaceful time of all recorded history. Media is BS.

The question is if you had a bunch of clones that only cared about their own (individual) well being, is that bad? The idea that a event or situation is bad is relative. To one person an event maybe bad but to another it may be good. The world is an amalgamation of individual interests. You can't really say the world is in a bad or good state. It just exists.

The media just plays the same crap over and over again. It is much worse than what they show.

Exactly! All of the things the media covers, be it shootings, rape, racism etc. does nothing to stop it, if anything it encourages it by making these people that are portrayed seem like celebrities in some ways. Remember that period of random school shootings amongst different states in the US in a very short period of time? It would be BS to say that the media's portrayal of each event had nothing to do with causing the next one. The media needs to shut up.

I suggest reading these two important books on this subject matter.

The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined -- Steven Pinker

Propaganda -- Edward Bernays (1928)
