I do not hide the fact that I enjoy and collect anime, but I do not rub it in everyone's face either.
Whoever asks me what my hobbies are gets to know.

I mean no offense, so please take none. But an attitude like that is very inviting to have your hobby ridiculed.

Anime isn't one of the first things I'd list if a stranger were to ask about my hobbies.
As much as I love anime, it has a certain air around it that is a bit off putting to a lot of non-fans.

I usually will say that I like reading and video games and see how they take that.
If they seem interested then I'll go further, but if their interests aren't very compatible then I'll leave it alone and try to find broader things to talk about.

If someone were to hear me listening to an anime soundtrack, or catch a glimpse of my phone background, I wouldn't really care.
I'd maybe wonder what they their thought was when they saw it, but that's about it.

I do...

I mean I am known as a ladys man and do modelling work. I go to college, have a job and go out on the weekends. Just like any normal guy.

I have always separated anything to do with the internet far from people who don't understand what it is. As far as I'm concerned I will be judged, I don't think I'm hanging around the wrong friends I just think my friends are not the kinda guys who'd understand anime and let's face it, most teenagers if told to say 2 things they know about anime fans would go 1. They watch hentai and 2. They dress up in public in stupid costumes (not that I think it's stupid but they can't relate to the cosplay like we can). It's a stressful existence, I don't let people on my phone incase they go on my music, I don't let people within 10 meters of my laptop and I as much as I'd love to wear anime based clothing I would just get stared at.

It is also inconvenient that the only people I know who watch anime are the kind of guys who bring their laptop to college and watch youtube videos all their frees rather than socializing.

That's just my circumstances, well done to the guys here with the guts to tell everyone about it.

I am in high school presently and a senior at that. I don't really hide that fact that I love anime and I put anime pics on my binders. It is just I try not to associate myself with the popular people and have made true friends with similar interests as mine, not just anime. Just finding the right people is my first point. One of my friend tries to hide the fact about anime because she doesn't want people to bother her about it because it's just annoying. But we do indulge ourselves in anime & manga a lot.
We like what we like and people can say all the crap they want but that doesn't change the fact that I will like anime. People can say whatever and they probably haven't take an open approach to anime before. Most people follow other people and don't even bother trying it. Trying other cultures things I believe is important. One of my friends is muslim and I tried there food and finished it. I don't care what race or religion people are because they are people. The countries issues can stay with that country but it should not affect how I should feel about it. I just try to go about things as open as I can.

I guess i do, yeah. Mainly because i don't know how my friends would react to me watcing anime. Not that it matters, I'd still watch it if they said they hated it. It's become such an large part of my life, i couldn't possibly throw it away just like that. But for all i know, they might already know I'm watching it, but decide to go along with it, or just accept that i like it.

I'm another person in the I don't advertise it but don't hide it group. I enjoy anime and manga but it most definately does not define me. I enjoy watching anime just as much as much as I enjoy other things in my life. To be honest I'm more open about it to people who aren't fans than people who are. In college my focus is East Asisn History and I meet a lot of people in classes that are borderline otaku about anime and its tough to talk to them about Japan without them going overboard. I like a lot of things about Japan and its culture just as much as i do its' animation and manga like their history, martial arts, and hobbies but the huge anime fans I encounter don't seem to care about such things. So I'll mention what series I'm watching/reading at the moment and give out or ask for a quick reccomendation but ussually thats about the extent i'll talk about anime to non close friends.

I guess the best example for how I feel about anime is about how I feel about Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. I love both of them movies/books but I don't dress up like a storm trooper or a hobbit or wear T-shirts advertising my fandom or feel the urge to really try and convince others to watch/read them besides a quick recommendation to do so . I don't look down on those who do but they're just sources of entertainment to me. Its the same for anime aand me its just one of many sources of enertainment I enjoy.

I watched SAO in the dining hall and got someone's attention and they said they'd have to check it out.

I am very openly a "nerd" or otaku or whatever.

I work as a machine builder, and pretty much all the guys there know that i'm into anime, video games, D&D and all that stuff.
Hell, I watch anime on my phone at work on breaks/lunch.
Most of them try to joke about it but I really don't see the point.
I don't make fun of them for being obsessed with sports/racing/snowmobiling/etc.
It's all the same in the end, an interest or a hobby. One is not ultimately better than the other.

Shouldn't be something you should hide! My friend hid the fact that he watches anime and when I said I do we became closer friends.

I don't hide it. And maybe if you try to get some real friends you won't have to do it anymore or just try to tell them that you like animes because if they really care about you, that can't be a problem. You can have friends that like animes and others who don't, you already have these, try to get more of the "others".

I do cosplay, so basically i don't care if some people don't like what i like as long i have friends who like it or not.

I don't hide it at all! Almost all of my friends watch anime. My friends who don't watch anime just ask me why I like it so much whenever I bring up the subject, but they don't look down on me.

what would be the point in hiding it...not like it is a social taboo? Although I'm not hardcore and I pretty much only watch anime and nothing more. I don't get into the branded merchandise like figurines. I think of it as just another tv show. Why would you hide watching a regular tv show?

If your embarrased it probably is not something you should be doing.

Unlike some people I never had a problem where anime was looked down on. There is a huge anime club on my campus so not really a problem. Most people don't care if it doesn't involve them. They simply brush it off as your hobby and move on. If you do find someone judgemental enough to look down on it they probably have more issues with everyone than just your hobby.
