I don't see any reason to hide it. But I don't throw it in peoples faces, anymore than I want people to broadcast their religious or political beliefs.
Everyone one of my friends knows that that I love anime and that I never leave the house wihtout a manga in my back pocket.
To me it is simple: Anime/manga is producing some of the most original, endearing and thought provoking stories out there.

Hiding being into anime will seem as stupid in 10 years as hiding being into videogames is today.
If you're 40, living at home, have no social life, and all you watch is anime about teenaged girls, MAYBE you should be embarrassed. Otherwise, I'm sure your friends have a lot worse secrets.

I think most anime being produced is highly derivative and based largely on melodrama. And I fucking love it.
I think a lot of Western writers feel that they have advanced past melodrama, regarding it as childish. And it is. But it is extremely entertaining, and makes your points not only clear, but interesting to the consumer.

I don't publicize it either beyond my circle of friends, but personally I'm fine with the fact that I watch anime. It's just a subculture--an alternative taste. And a popular one at that.

I do not see or feel any reason why i need to hide it. For it is not illegal and certainly it is not a taboo for my age 
Basically, i do not care what they think. Anime is way cooler than most people, politics, news and celebrity alive if you ask me...i am more hiding the fact that i am a woman addicted to shopping

Watching Anime is more popular than you might think. A lot of people have at least watch some either on toonami (cartoon network) or the big name ones like bleach, One piece, etc.
No reason to hide a hobby if you enjoy it. What is wrong with anime that you would have to hide it?
Hentai is another story though...just saying

I'm lucky enough to have a girlfriend who loves anime and manga as much as I do. So the fact that I have over 2TB of anime, and an entire bookcase filled with manga is not a source of shame, but a source of pride among us
