I used to hide the fact that i listened to Japanese Music and not much on Anime, but as i grew older i somehow stopped caring about what people thought of me, i just don't really give a fuck anymore xD. And my friends seem cool with it, my sis in fact started watching asian dramas now cause of me. LOL so she don't say that my stuff is gay or lame now.

*looks down at anime shirt, looks around at the "public"*
Well... if they don't look at my shirt or my room, computers, etc; they'd never know I liked anime.
And if they don't talk to me, they won't find out I like Japan either.

My hobbies and opinions are very hush hush you see.

Obviously. lol

The last time I allowed someone to see that I watch anime was in college with my roommates I gained one amazing friend and had two roommates spend two years complaining that I should grow up and do things with them that they liked (like watch Hannah Montana and other Disney Channel shows) and that me watching anime made it hard for them to come in my room and ask if I wanted to do things with them. Those were some rough two years on top of my parents just not liking me talking to them about anime. Because of that I keep my anime and manga to myself.

If someone finds out about me and anime I don't hide it, but every time (with the one stated exception) I've told someone about it space forms and eventually they stop talking to me. So I actively don't tell anyone about/allow anyone to see me watching anime. When I lived with my parents, I kept my anime and manga in a bookshelf in my closet so they wouldn't have to give me "the look" every time they came in to my room.

That was sad to read!!! I've never had anyone judge me openly for it or give me looks...well, because I don't look like someone you should openly make fun of lol but yeah I'm glad you shared that with everyone

Anime isn't one of the first things I'd list if a stranger were to ask about my hobbies.
As much as I love anime, it has a certain air around it that is a bit off putting to a lot of non-fans.

I usually will say that I like reading and video games and see how they take that.
If they seem interested then I'll go further, but if their interests aren't very compatible then I'll leave it alone and try to find broader things to talk about.

If someone were to hear me listening to an anime soundtrack, or catch a glimpse of my phone background, I wouldn't really care.
I'd maybe wonder what they their thought was when they saw it, but that's about it.

Yep, I'm pretty much the same way! it's not that I'm ashamed of anime in and of itself...it's the fact that the stereotype for anime lovers can affect my relations with otherwise potential relationships.

I do...

I mean I am known as a ladys man and do modelling work. I go to college, have a job and go out on the weekends. Just like any normal guy.

I have always separated anything to do with the internet far from people who don't understand what it is. As far as I'm concerned I will be judged, I don't think I'm hanging around the wrong friends I just think my friends are not the kinda guys who'd understand anime and let's face it, most teenagers if told to say 2 things they know about anime fans would go 1. They watch hentai and 2. They dress up in public in stupid costumes (not that I think it's stupid but they can't relate to the cosplay like we can). It's a stressful existence, I don't let people on my phone incase they go on my music, I don't let people within 10 meters of my laptop and I as much as I'd love to wear anime based clothing I would just get stared at.

It is also inconvenient that the only people I know who watch anime are the kind of guys who bring their laptop to college and watch youtube videos all their frees rather than socializing.

That's just my circumstances, well done to the guys here with the guts to tell everyone about it.

I used to be that way with my iPod. I have a lot of J-pop and I was REALLY self-conscious about letting people look through my music.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm a mom of a college student and I watch anime. Yeah, my kids and hubby give me a little bit of a hard time about it, but honestly, I don't care. My friends don't watch it but accept that I do, and respect the fact that I'm honest about who and what I am. Life is too short to worry about what other people think and if what you like doesn't hurt anyone, why not enjoy?

what would be the point in hiding it...not like it is a social taboo? Although I'm not hardcore and I pretty much only watch anime and nothing more. I don't get into the branded merchandise like figurines. I think of it as just another tv show. Why would you hide watching a regular tv show?

If your embarrased it probably is not something you should be doing.

Unlike some people I never had a problem where anime was looked down on. There is a huge anime club on my campus so not really a problem. Most people don't care if it doesn't involve them. They simply brush it off as your hobby and move on. If you do find someone judgemental enough to look down on it they probably have more issues with everyone than just your hobby.

Good points man, good points.

yes and here is why

1) Anime has a social stigma thanks to the early 90s where it was publicly advertised as tits and gore entertainment.
1a) Because of this stigma it can affect your career and who you make friends with.

2) Let's face it anime has moved from tits & gore to something worse. Incest, moe, lolita garbage.

3) While we don't mind the inherent weirdness of Japanese culture everyone else would be terrified of it.

I definitely have to agree...like I've stated several times, it's not the anime itself that I was embarrassed about..it was the reputation.

I watch anime, play video games, and watch My Little Pony. I'm open about what I like, though I don't usually say I like MLP unless directly asked. If someone isn't into something you are, you probably share some other interest with them. Just like I don't get angry if people have different music tastes than I do, or they listen to something I think is really shitty, like rap.

Bro I'm in college too, I like girls as well and to be honest, I openly admit that i love anime and and J-pop. I play exit trance in my car. Just be cool about who you are and what you do. People will like and respect you just for that. You might have a couple of bros who'll bag you for it, but just bag on them back, it's all in good fun anyways.

I love this comment! Just be cool about who you are and what you do....great advice.
