I'm taking my third Japanese course and going next year as an exchange student. Everyone in there likes anime but honestly the people who are all about anime all day everyday aren't really my type to hang out with . That's why there is a conflict. lol it's hard to find people who are interested in anime and athletics and other things as well..

Dude that awesome! man how I much I would have loved to be an exchange student in Japan. Damn money really is a pain in the ass hahaha, but that's in the past. I'm currently studying Japanese as well with the goal of moving to Japan at least when I'm 25. The problem is the views of other people who don't understand. I am not an an all out anime guy i do like staying fit and my main thing is cars, but like you said its hard finding people who like the similar things, but its best to be open about it (of course not flaunting about it) and people who are too shy to admit they watch anime because of what other people might say then they'll most likely come open as well. IDK that's my reasoning to not denying it, not sure if it works or not, but it helps me.

I'm kind of in the same boat. I love watching anime and even listening to Japanese music, but I am also a guy who plays college hockey and has friends that are pretty much all the athletic type. If my teamates found out I watched anime, I would definitely be teased to hell.

Because of that, I have hidden the fact that I watch anime for 7 years now and have mastered hiding it too. I know that I shouldn't be ashamed of loving anime, but I also don't want to be looked at and treated like I came from a different planet. So I hide it and for now I'm fine with it.

In the near future, I plan on going to a couple anime cons and try to meet people who share the interests as me.

You know, baby steps.

Man, Im right here with you. I dont really tell anyone either.
Once I told a friend and she looked at me all wired, like im sort of freak. hahaha
After that i never really talked about it with anyone. it usually depends on the type of person they are.
But i dont think its wired at all! How could you not love anime, its amazing! (:

People always look at me funny when I tell them that I watch anime, but that's their call. I personally think that anime is fantastic, and I will continue to watch it. If people judge me or have problems with me, then they can go jump in a lake. xD
Besides, that's why forums and friends' lists were made in places like these, right? So that everyone can find friends who have the same interests as your own!

I'm in the same boat... No one who knows me in the flesh knows that I watch a ton of anime, like to draw and play a few games. I'm not a gamer or anything. But I'm in high school, and if you cut out all that part I don't seem like that kind of person... I don't want to get teased or anything, and because I'm a girl it's apparently more shocking to everyone... I know there's a few in my grade who watch anime, the ones that are the most vocal about it don't have many friends...
Bu then there are others who I realised watch anime too, or at least read manga, just from a conversation here, or seeing a wall post there, and they surprised me.
Come to think of it, I reckon there's quite a few who watch anime "undergroud" but they're like me. They're just to scared to make it public. The only thing is, they've all got at least one other in their group who watches it too.
My only hope is when I start school this year, I'm continuing Japanese as an HSC course, and my class is going to be really small, like 5 or 6 people, just the people who really want to learn Japanese, and as far as I know, all of us except maybe one watch anime.
I'm just hoping it'll pop up in a conversation or something...

Yeah I'm not sure if you read my message mentioning I'm in my third japanese class...and it's just kinda depressing when I look around the class room...99% of the people in there are out of shape, obnoxious, and just your stereotypical anime lovers... our sensei asked us all why we are taking the class..and out of about 20 students or so I was literally the only one who didn't say I was in there because I love anime. My mother is half japanese and long story short I have an interest in Japan and Japanese culture that doesn't stem from anime. That class makes it harder to be free about my love for anime because I don't want to be associated with them...not because everyone else thinks they're kinda lame..but because I do..lol that sounds mean but I'm not calling them lame for anime..obviously..it's because they don't take pride in anything else. Anime should be a part of your life...not the center of it.

Commenting again because bored.
Not really.
I got my friends by being open about my anime love.

Do not fear yourself into conformity, just enjoy anime for yourself, if your peers don't know who cares don't tell them. If they know and don't give a shit (like most sane people) its a win win. Don't be ashamed you like it, just enjoy it, but if you immerse yourself in the fanbase and feel shame than that's your own damn fault xD and should stop it cause well that sucks. Myself have been made fun of since I was a teen for watching it, now I could care less what people think, I honestly find people dull for enjoying media that are not animated.

Nope. I'm in college, and still watch anime on the weekends. I wouldn't hide who I am. Just like the person above me said, it is a part of who I am.

I quoted you cuz Happy makes me happy.

Anyway, everyone I care about already knows that I am into anime. If new people ask me what my favorite show is, i usually respond with either Gurren Lagann, Fullmetal Alchemist, or Guilty Crown. If I get a funny look, I drop the subject and move on. If they ask what it is, I'll describe the story a little bit. If they get excited, I get excited. I'll feel bad for any future spouse that doesn't like it, because all I really like is a good story and anime has some of the best.

I don't hide the fact that I watch anime, I'm actually rather proud of it. XD Some of my friends like it too, some don't. I really don't know people who think it's WEIRD, and on Cape Cod, MA, it's becomingly increasingly popular. Haha

Oh no, I'm not some obsessed anime freak or anything, if it was the center of my life I wouldn't pretend I don't watch it. It just gets lonely not having someone to discuss the latest plot-twist with or something...
But my class isn't like some otaku fan club, now that we've reached our final years, only the ones who are actually serious about learning Japanese are left. Which is good, we might get something done this year.
Like back when learning a language was compulsory, nearly everyone picked Japanese because they thought it would be some bludge lesson where we don't do anything except watch movies or have an anime marathon or something stupid like that. So naturally the class was out of control and we learnt nothing. The last two years were better, because everyone in that class actually chose to do Japanese. But the next two will be the best, because the ones left are the ones who really want to learn it fully and are considering using it in a uni course or a career.

Don't hide form yourself. Be you. Don't be afraid. Let them know, because they aren't worth the sum of you and your friends. Think.

Not really. I tend not to assume everyone believes in stereotypes.
