I do tend to hide the fact that I watch anime but it really all depends on the other person.

I don't and now I generally don't need to. My most immediate friends - ie. my housemates - consider it a normal hobby.

My old flatmates didn't but I didn't bother hiding it and even showed it to them if they were in my room. I thought that we could just accept each other's hobbies because we had a lot of disagreements when it came to it. Turns out a few of them thought it was weird, but they thought I was weird anyway.

I'm on the fence on this issue.

I'm not ashamed that I'm a fan of anime, but I don't like the stigma that's associated with anime fandom. People either think that it's for children/immature adults, or that it's fetishistic with connections to pedofilia (honestly, with the stuff that's being produced these days I'm not sure I can totally blame them on that second one). People are always curious about my El Psy Congroo t-shirt and I'm usually reluctant to tell them, even-though the show is just within my limits for tolerated fan-service.

On the other hand, it's an entertainment medium that I am passionate about so it would be great to meet people who share one of my interests. Also, it's an industry that I would like to see thriving and every little bit of exposure helps. I think that's one of the biggest things holding the anime industry back in this country is the stigma attached to it that makes people hesitant to talk about it.

I guess I could use some input on the subject. What are your experiences with this? Do you follow anime related stuff on facebook? Do you go so far as to discuss it in a public forum that is attached to your name? Do you wear anime-related clothing in public? Do you guys have a different experience of how people perceive anime and its fans? Discuss.

I personally do not hide the fact I watch anime, but then again I work in the IT world and everyone I work with watches anime also.

Personally I think people get to hung up on what other people thing of them, just be yourself and enjoy life instead of worrying whats normal or not.

I have been watching anime for a long time now and have only told one person just recently. For whatever reason anime is looked down upon. Like if you say you like anime, people look at you like you're a freak and stuff like that. Not to mention almost nobody even watches anime here. Oh well, what can you do?

I study IT so hiding anime is pretty much impossible and everyone I know watch it there. We have discussions about anime and those discussions man, they get heated pretty quickly!

I don't try to hide it but I won't tell people unless they specifically ask. My family knows about it and that I listen to J-pop and J-rock. I even got my friend who's kinda a sports jock into some anime, but I don't ever tell them about some of the more ecchi stuff I watch lol. Some stuff they're just better off not knowing.

For the most part yes, my friends have made it apparent that they all think people who watch anime are creepy weirdos with no social life. I would really prefer for them to keep me out of that judgmental state of mind of theirs but hey if someone asks me in a one on one I tell'em

This is exactly what my friends think, and if some one asks me in front of others i don't talk about anime or mention it. If some one brings up anime and we're alone I'll talk about it sometimes.

It's not so much that I hide it but rather that it's not a subject I like to bring into discussion. I'm perfectly fine with enjoying anime alone or with an online forum of equal interests. I mean, I have some friends who do occasionally watch anime, but there's really not that much to discuss other than when I like to rant about some newer, popular series that failed really hard spectacularly. Personally, I don't find that much interest in talking about most anime but rather the reactions/influences of it on our generations. There's just a lot of bullshit ideas/perspectives that find their way into the anime culture, but I'm still a big anime fan because there's always shows that are just pure enjoyment or interesting social commentary. It'll probably always be a huge hate/love thing for me.

Ha! If I get to know the person well enough; eventually I pop the question if they watch anime. If no than we move on; if yes than we're having a discussion but I honestly don't care if people know I watch it or not.
I even bought a CrunchyRoll T-Shirt and started wearing it around the area. (although the imprint of advertising the .com website on the back of the shirt was a bit much)
I'm starting my first year of college this year and my friends told me their is an anime club and looking forward to it!
