Of course not, anyone can tell when they go in my room. I've made anime posters. I've got some anime t shirts. If someone asks what my main hobby is, I'd say anime. I knew tons of people in highschool that watched anime at least weekly. There's no reason to hide it at all. I believe I even used anime pictures on basically a school report.

It's hard not feeling self conscious about something that you are passionate about, particularly something like anime that is so overly stigmatized, and especially in a situation like that. Ultimately, if you surround yourself with good people, regardless of if they like anime or not everything works out. I'd say about 3% of my friends share my love for anime and I very rarely catch any flack about it. When I do it's light teasing and I can handle that. Plus, my girlfriend doesn't watch anime, or really like it that much, and we get along perfectly well.

Nope.

If people can talk about watching Naked and Afraid without a bit of embarrassment, I don't mind being right up front about my anime addiction.

I don't hide it but I don't talk about it either. Only if the topic is raised, then I'll gladly discuss it; which is pretty rare though, considering none of my girlfriends are even in the slightest bit interested in Anime ~_~ *sigh*

I'm a 20 year old college student, have been heavily involved with sports my whole life, usually considered a "ladies man" or "pretty boy" and I'm not what people think of when they think of anime..and we all know that in the U.S. anime is looked down upon as being "lame" or stupid or whatever. In the past, I would feel extremely pressured to hide the fact that I watch anime...because of my personality and interests I find myself around people who don't watch anime and usually think it's weird. I'm a lot more open about it nowadays seeing as to how it's my life and I shouldn't be embarrassed about these kinds of things. I also listen to J-pop and am still self-conscious about that too..as far as others hearing me listening to it. Does anybody feel the same way or maybe used to and just got over it like I'm trying to?

Honestly, I don't hide it at all. My whole family watches it with me and I have a lot of friends that watch anime too. You just need to find the right people. I found them in high school while I was still young and in my community, nobody really cares about what you watch or what you do as a sport. As long as you're a good person, that's all that matters. All of us are really good people who just happen to like anime too.

Now, I know that not every community is different, but it's widely accepted in my area and we also have our own con locally that is fast growing that happens right at the state fairgrounds here in New York. I guess my best advice, if I could give any, is just be you. Don't try to hide the fact that you watch anime or even listen to J-Pop, J-Rock, or like any other kind of culture's art that it has to offer. If they don't like it, then obviously they aren't people you need to be around.

Take the anime Oreimo, for example.
It really teaches you how to be who you are for who you are and not to be ashamed of that fact. It really teaches an important life lesson and that is one of the reasons I love it so much.

Also, recapping what I said before, find people that you trust if you really don't want to just come out and say it. Start with one person and then when you're comfortable, tell another person. Then tell another person. That really builds a circle of trust and helps you to slowly come out of that, "I'm afraid I won't be accepted" shell. Once you feel comfortable with that circle of people, then hopefully you'll be comfortable enough to just come out and say, "Yeah. I watch anime. I listen to J-Pop. You got a problem with that?"

So, from one fellow anime lover to another, I hope this helps you out at least a little bit. Consider everyone on this thread as well your little circle of trust that started. We're all together in one little group that a lot of people aren't ready to admit about themselves and we're all here to be the start of your help and support.

Nope. Don't care what people think, really. However, I don't really talk about it either unless I am with my friends who are all into it like I am. Heck, some are even more into it than I am.

Considering I live in a town full of goth/metalhead wanna-be's, I'm bashed just for wearing sandals. With that in mind, I hide every detail of my personality from these ignorant douches.

I did before but somewhere along I stopped caring what people think and do whatever. My friends know it but I don't bring it up all the time unless its possibly relevant to their interests. When I'm in public its completely random ranging from the subtle (Eden of the East messenger bag, Britannia flag items from Code Geass) to the obvious (Madoka Magica messenger bag, manga that I read on the train).

Of course when I'm hanging out with my friends from anime club all bets are off.
