I haven't had to hide it yet, since I only started watching anime a week after school ended. But since I'm still in high school, which is really just kids 14-17 judging each other for 4 years, I'm probably not going to let it out

I definitely do not hide it because frankly I do not care what any else thinks about me. People will find fault with you no matter what you do so you might as well have fun and enjoy life.

Meh, only a few close friends know my power level.

Wouldn't really say anything to other friends or people who didnt know, but if they entered my room they would see wall scrolls so im not really hiding it.

Depends on what I'm watching at the time, if it is Black Lagoon or Steins;Gate I watch it fullscreen on my laptop..... if it is YuriYuri or A Certain Scientific Railgun I go into porn mode and watch it on my Ipod huddled in a corner.

I do. I have one friend who knows. It is mostly because of the stereotypes associated with those kinds of shows, where you have to be a nerd or little kid.

i dont hide the fact that i watch anime from my friends and siblings but i do however hide it from some select parental figures because my parents are divorced and one of them is crazy and ignorantly religous but the other who is my dad introduced me to metal, video games and then i introduced him to anime kind of i mean he probably already knew about it but i was embarrased to let him see me watch it but i tried one day and he started watching bleach, eureka7, and dragonballZ with me along with metalocalypse and other [as] shows which i guess doesnt really count but i still dont let my mom or grandparents know because of how they were raised so yea ...... i mean it just depends on who you want to know because sometimes you can tell how people act how theyre going to respond to things they think are a negative influence when in actuality its just something different from the activities they are used to and are also taught to dislike or uncondone anything they would see as different

I don't say anything about watching anime only because no one ask's I don't hide it though. I own a hetalia wallet so everyone at some point in time will find out and when I pull it out I get one of two reactions, I either get the wtf did I just see was that a pink wallet that just came out of your pocket with some anime shit on it or I get dude that wallet is totally legit as it is the germany passport wallet if you don't know it has a thing of germany holding a beer and sausage which looks pretty boss to me. Those who give me the first reaction just tend to be like ok whateves that's kind of weird but so far I don't think any one has stopped talking to me over the fact that I watch anime, those who don't care for it just don't talk about it, people shouldn't be scared of what others think.

When I was younger (13 years old), I was made fun off by my classmates. I was so enthusiastic about watching anime, learning the culture and even wanting to speak Japanese. I was bullied to the point of depression; I would go home crying everyday. I remember people calling the Grudge because of the stupid horror movie-apparently I looked like the girl.
To cope with my situation, I tried changing myself to someone I wasn't. I stopped watching anime. I stopped talking to my friends who were also "otaku". I figured it would make things better....
Later on, I stopped giving a duck about what people thought about me, and things actually got better. I didn't revert back to my old otaku ways though. I had new interests, new opinions, and a new style. I would occasionally flip on Adult Swim to see what's one, but I really got back into it. I guess I grew out of it.
3 years went by and by this time being a "Nerd" was cool, It was the Hipster thing to do apparently. That enraged me...
I was pick on, until felt suicidal; for being this so called nerd, and now it's cool?
Eventually, I reassessed myself. I realized I felt happier watching anime and getting all nerdy.
I've since graduated high school, and all I do is watch anime all day long. (Even though I should be looking for a job.)

I am quite proud to be apart anime community. I am not ashamed of it; I definitely don't hide it.
I flaunt my otaku pride.
I have even got other people into watching anime.

Nope.

I don't even hide the fact that I'm terrified of ghost stories and spiders.

I'm a 20 year old college student, have been heavily involved with sports my whole life, usually considered a "ladies man" or "pretty boy" and I'm not what people think of when they think of anime..and we all know that in the U.S. anime is looked down upon as being "lame" or stupid or whatever. In the past, I would feel extremely pressured to hide the fact that I watch anime...because of my personality and interests I find myself around people who don't watch anime and usually think it's weird. I'm a lot more open about it nowadays seeing as to how it's my life and I shouldn't be embarrassed about these kinds of things. I also listen to J-pop and am still self-conscious about that too..as far as others hearing me listening to it. Does anybody feel the same way or maybe used to and just got over it like I'm trying to?

When I was your age, I was also a ladies man in college and was very popular. I was popular for my music, poetry and performing arts, though, not sports. I never hid my love for anime, pro wrestling or different music. I would watch anime right in the lounge of my dorm on the shared TV. Nobody ever mocked it, and some folks would sit down and watch it with me. (Not often with anime, but a lot with Wrestling, because it was more popular at the turn of the millennium, back with Stone Cold and The Rock and such.) I was never ashamed of it and nobody ever made fun of me because of it. Not one single time.

As a rule, never be ashamed of anything that you like. You don't want anybody in your circle who doesn't accept everything about you. If someone is going to disrespect you or disassociate themselves from you because of something as silly as being into SNSD or Big Bang, you don't really need friends like that, anyway. And you NEVER want to hide who you are. Because that just makes you a phony. I think one of the main reasons I was so popular with women is because I was always genuine, authentic and confident in who I was. Keep it real, friend.

I agree with this. Even if someone doesn't enjoy it the way you do, they probably aren't worth being around if they aren't willing to accept your preferences.

As for hiding it, not really. I'm typing this from work, where I have a few mecha sitting on my desk. I don't wedge it into every conversation, but I don't hide it.
