I had the same problem trying to explain Elfen Lied though I did manage to win that one.
However I had no excuse for my copy of highschool of the dead.

mmmh. You know, i used to be the type to hide watching anime long ago. However Nowdays i sorta show it through my personality; if it comes up in conversation then sure, I let them know that I'm a big anime fan. its my niche. Usually then i use it as a tool to get to know the other person a little better by finding out the strange thing that they like and heck, if i want to relate to them, everyone's seen dbz at least once, you can pull a few jokes about it or talk about your childhood days to break the ice if you want to meet new people. If its a girl, then well I'm sure you can pull some sailor moon knowledge out of that noggin of yours.

I don't hide it.But it's rather the anime i watch.I wouldn't want to embarrass myself or rather make the other person feel nervous for watching some-kind of anime genres that some would mostly watch alone

Nope lol, I guess because I'm asian most people think I do ~-~
I don't bring it up but my friends do & it's nice what they recommend to me.

I'm a quarter Japanese but I don't think that's enough for it to be completely "okay" that I watch it lol unlike someone who is obviously Asian.

lol I understand people thought I'm mixed with white and vietnamese, Just where my school population it's mostly Caucasian and African Americans.
So a lot of people from my school would ask if I do 'asian things' but I'm just a normal human. ~ idk I'm making no sense. :c

No you're making sense lol I understand.

I've never really hid watching anime from my friends. I'll bring it up if a buddy of mine asks me what I've been watching/doing recently and I'll tell him about a new show I'm enjoying. I just treat it like any TV show. People rush home and look forward to American Idol, or the new Walking Dead, or Big Bang Theory, and I look forward to the new Chihayafuru. I own anime figures, but I never really draw attention to them, but whenever friends(male and female) come by they're drawn to the display case like a moth to a flame, and I just let them be.

Even amongst the geeky folks at work, it's hard to discuss anime just because it's fairly diverse. I have a friend who's into more shonen type stuff and I like shoujo/josei type stories so our interests don't even overlap.

When I was younger, I always felt that other people were trying to push their interests and media favorites onto me, as if I should like what they like, and that's cool, but I wanted to find something that I could call my own and I found those shows in anime. I'm a creative person too so it's influenced me differently than if I were to only have a western perspective. For instance, I think Shintoism and the way ghosts and ancestors are treated (in Asian culture in general) leads to different ghost stories. It's not all horror. You can have a show like Natsume's Book of Friends. I like the fable-like sci-fantasy world found in Galaxy Express 999. It has an atmosphere all of its own.

It is difficult to elaborate on some anime shows since there are a lot of anime tropes that you have to mentally sweep under the rug. I could talk all day on why I think Spice and Wolf is an interesting show on economics, but if the first thing you see is naked, nubile wolf girl, it's still a pretty hard sell.

I'm becoming the same way, if somebody brings it up I MIGHT tell them I was watching anime or I might just say I was being bored. It's about time I grow up and stop putting so much stock into others opinions. It's a process though..anyway you're right. Anime in general has a natural down fall when it comes to it's general acceptance because of fan service and naked wolf girls..which, by the way, Spice and Wolf is an excellent story executed just as well.

Not particularly.
If I find out someone I know likes Anime then I'll try to prod the discussion into light Anime discussion.

Not at all... It's the first thing people will notice about me when they try to get to know me..... Whether they like it or not is not my problem.

I don't hide it but I just don't bring it up. If it somehow comes up in a conversation then sure...I'll talk about anime with you. I do watch anime in public. I don't care about what people think about me watching it honestly...they can call me or anime whatever they want. They will never understand what I understand when it comes to anime. A bond that was well made from my very childhood and will continue to grow stronger as I live.

i dont hide it at all but sort of showcase it. I was lucky to have friends that thought some the shows were actually pretty cool. I actually have a nerd room in my house set up to watch anime or playing video games in 5.1 surround sound and 3-d. Its my prized Man Cave. You can tell the people who dont watch it so i would usually play something else to be a nice. It's never been a problem yet.

good gosh, I been watching these servers upgrade for 6 hours today alone,
if I could not stream anime on my laptop on the side I would melt down.

I make folks around here insane with server names like Rei, Misato, Asuka and appropriate screen shots on the desktop so I know which server I am working on. (although this does not work if I am in am in ssh.

Why would I feel the need to hide my hobbies? It's what interests me and if other people arent open minded enough to accept them even if they are "lame, or stupid or whatever" they're certainly not the kind of person I would associate with anyways.
