I don't hide it but I don't flaunt my interests to other people. All of my friends know I watch anime and read manga. I know they are good friends because they have easily accepted that part of me. Even though most of them do not enjoy anime or manga, I do have one friend that I can casually converse with. I have another friend who is more hard core like me and we can easily talk for hours though that is actually quite rare.

I'm a 20 year old college student, have been heavily involved with sports my whole life, usually considered a "ladies man" or "pretty boy" and I'm not what people think of when they think of anime..and we all know that in the U.S. anime is looked down upon as being "lame" or stupid or whatever. In the past, I would feel extremely pressured to hide the fact that I watch anime...because of my personality and interests I find myself around people who don't watch anime and usually think it's weird. I'm a lot more open about it nowadays seeing as to how it's my life and I shouldn't be embarrassed about these kinds of things. I also listen to J-pop and am still self-conscious about that too..as far as others hearing me listening to it. Does anybody feel the same way or maybe used to and just got over it like I'm trying to?

I feels .. currently going through the same.

Like most of you I don't advertise my love for anime, but I don't hide it either... most of the time.

The only time I will hide it is if I'm talking to a woman I'm trying to get with. I'll maybe tell her after a month or two, but it's not something I'm going to bring up on the first date. lol

I go to a school where... people don't even know what anime is, let alone Japanese culture. I do hide it around many people, but if I see an asian student THEN NOPE.

I know what you mean. Since so many people in the U.S look down on anime, you think they may look down on you. But life's too short to worry about the petty thoughts of others.
I used to hide the fact that I watch anime from everyone, but I slowly opened up about it. Some people know me now as the "anime guy", but not in a bad sense. I don't advertise it as some have said, but I don't publicly reject it either to save face.
I sometimes watch it in school when I have nothing to do. Of course I don't watch any ecchi animes in public because then people would think I'm weird; that's a whole other issue.

I think some people look down on anime because they instantly think "Hentai". When I first watched an anime in my living room, some of my family members thought I was watching anime porn. Clearly there are some public misconceptions about anime.

Definitely about the misconceptions...the reason I used to hide it completely is because the people who were seen as liking anime were the super hard core fans...and then everybody assumed that if you like anime you must be like them. Most people are never exposed to anime in the first and then see some weird people who don't have a life aside from anime and make assumptions...can't blame them TOO much, but it's still closed minded of them.

Yeah, in my High School the only people that watched anime were only hardcore anime fans as well. I used to think the same thing, that if I watched anime I would end up being just like them.
I thought of anime as my guilty pleasure when I first started watching it. Take into account that I was involved in school clubs, some sports, and was in no way considered "socially awkward". Thus, it kind of makes it hard to open up around so many close minded people as you said.
If I hadn't taken the initiative to see what was so great about anime, I would still be another anime-hater.

I don't anymore because I just don't give a s*#@ what other people think. Though I like anime, compared to people who look down on anime I will make fun of it far more than them. I had a friend who always brought manga to school and I always would give him a hard time because of it, then I would borrow the manga, read it, then give him my honest opinion on the book right after I was done making fun of him the second time.

When you hit 30 you don't give a shizznit what ppl think anymore..
The friends I used to watch anime with dont really watch anymore.. but there are a lot of ppl out there that share your interest..
When I was a teen I was exposed to that gateway drug known as "Dragon Ball Z" I dont know if any of you heard of it..
..I've been exploring and watching ever since ..

basically.. who cares?
I watch with my son, its a good way to practice reading..
I enjoy it and is nothing to be ashamed about.

I'm kind of in the same boat. I love watching anime and even listening to Japanese music, but I am also a guy who plays college hockey and has friends that are pretty much all the athletic type. If my teamates found out I watched anime, I would definitely be teased to hell.

Because of that, I have hidden the fact that I watch anime for 7 years now and have mastered hiding it too. I know that I shouldn't be ashamed of loving anime, but I also don't want to be looked at and treated like I came from a different planet. So I hide it and for now I'm fine with it.

In the near future, I plan on going to a couple anime cons and try to meet people who share the interests as me.

You know, baby steps.

Lol right..baby steps. I'm just gonna walk around with a huge sign over my head "I love anime and f*** you". How's that for baby steps!

Everybody has their own baby steps I guess. haha

i love anime, if i ever date, my gf has to love anime. simple. i wont hide it from anyone, never did. hell when i was growing up, saturday morning cartoons was mostly anime (kids wb had alot in the mornings) and i watched all of them. hell its the only reason i got up early in the morning. of course back then my dad would watch it with us and we would always eat when it was the comercials. fun times. now, i just watch them by myself and i am glad i have this account on here so i can watch whenever i want as long as i pay (which i will when i have another job, only thing i hate about having no job, no anime to legally watch and no games to buy)

of course my first anime was the first ever episode of pokemon. i also miss watching card capture sakura.

I don't hide it. I'm the type of person who'll wear buttons of my favorite anime characters to school and not care at all about the looks that people give me. I'd confidently tell anyone, any day that i watch anime a lot. It's something i've learned to be proud of and not hide. I couldn't care less what people think anymore. I don't waste all of my time watching anime, but it's something that i love so i don't mind showing it.

I don't hide it, but I also don't otaku it up and talk about it in public unless I'm specifically asked about it. You shouldn't be ashamed of something you enjoy, even if anyone over 40 refers to it as Japanese cartoons.

*Mom walks in while you're watching anime

*You quickly exit out of your media player

Mom: WTF?! What was that you were watching just now???

You: Errr...just interracial gay porn, with a midget.

Mom: Oh...ok...carry on.

*Mom walks out of room

*You breath a sigh of relief, turn anime back on
