Ehh, it depends. I don't care if my roommates see me watching it per say, but I don't go around in public flaunting it either. I may mention something if someone else brings it up, but I definitely don't come across as a "typical" anime viewer (according to biases).

Nope, I'm too old to care what people think.
I talk openly about it all of the time and I often tell others in hopes that they open up to me about it. If not, then I keep it moving.

My job pretty much knows exactly what Sword Art Online is even though they've never watched a second of it.

I have been faced with this EXACT SAME DILEMMA! And its good to know that I'm not the only one! I've been watching anime since I was 12 but not even my best friends know it. My little brother and I watched it together when we lived with our parents but now that we've grown we occasionally talk to each other about it so we're each others outlet for our geekiness I always felt like if anyone found out that I couldn't handle it based on how people perceived me. Just as you say, when people think of anime, they would never picture me as a person to do it.

No, I definitely don't.
You wouldn't know from just seeing me on the street. My shoe collection rivals my video game collection. Which is nothing compared to my anime collection. Which so far, I haven't personally met anyone who has beat any of them in size. Or who has any of my game/anime related tattoos.

Just because we take care of our appearances, and enjoy other activities, doesn't mean we can't indulge ourselves in things we love.
And if they think I'm lame for the things I like, then I simply don't want to be their friend.

I got out of that shell in high school. No one has said anything about it, but i do occasionally have to explain why a girls panties will occasionally show if i am watching at work or school.

i most certainly never advertise it. but my close friends know i like it. they dont have a clue about how much time i spend watching it. i also watch a lot of korean shows and even some chinese and Taiwanese stuff too. and listen to the music too. i really do try to keep the extent to which i enjoy asian culture to myself, but i dont try to hide the fact that its one my interests. i do, however, really wish i could share that part of myself with at least a few people in my life. there are so many shows and songs that i love, and i wish i had some one around with which to enjoy then. but then again this stuff is just one fraction of who i am, not all of who i am, so i guess its less that i keep it too myself as it is that i dont make a big deal about it.
i definately consider myself a 22 year old closet nerd. becausei love to game (especially rpg and mmorpg) and because movies and books like lord of the rings are my favorite. but on the outside people think im fun and cool... tis but a rouse!

(ps. maybe is because im a chick, but isnt gaming/being a gamer really frowned upon too in the states? i feel the need to down play my love of video games all the time too. its kinda like sports and shooter games are the only socially acceptable ones. or maybe its just me..)

What a great response!! I feel like...you might be the female version of me lol ANYWAY...thanks for your comment Girls gaming is actually encouraged in the States...when guys find a girl who is open about her gaming she becomes cooler automatically lol gamer chicks are cool in the states! It doesn't matter if it's rpg or mmo or shooter. Call of duty is actualy quite popular with a lot of girls! I play with some regularly.

My close friends know I watch but only a few know just how much t I watch (like that one day last weekend where I watched 26 episodes in 12 hours... I actually told two or three about that only because it was quite the feat and I set a personal record haha). Idt anyone knows that I watch almost every single day. I used to keep my mouth shut tight about it, but now I've mentioned it enough that my friends got used to it. Some of them will mention or bring up that I watch it and I've finally gotten used to the fact that its common knowledge that its an interest of mine.

I still don't feel inclined to tell people I just met, though. It's not that I'm ashamed of it, like the guy who started this thread pointed out it tends to be frowned on in America so I'd rather people get to know me and then find out my "weirder" interests.

Also, meeting a fellow anime fan is always so exciting for me!

I'm right there with you! There have been many days during which I've spent every waking moment watching anime..and if any of my college friends knew that..I don't know how I would feel! Thanks for the comment : )

Yeah it's kind of a pain isn't it?! haha I'm glad I started this thread because I feel a lot better about being honest with the people around, and specifically the people I call my friends.

It depends I don't go around hiding it like if I'm bored at school I'll go onto my computer and watch some episodes but I also don't flaunt it. It's something I like to do in my spare time so I usually just enjoy it whenever

I think I can relate to you. I keep watching anime a secret unless the person watches it to or they're friends and they ask. I don't bring up the subject of anime on my own, I wait for someone else to bring it up to make it less awkward for me hahaha. You could say that I take an approach similar to Kikusui and reserve anime for personal time and away from my social life in a way.

Anime is like a penis. Its ok to be proud of it. But just don't be whipping it out in public and start waving it around.
