Me too...

Moe without a good story and character development is just nothing . For me there must be balance in all the elements of what makes a good show.

There is nothing wrong with watching some light hearted moe. Frankly I get sick of serious anime quickly so I need to give my brain a rest so I watch an episode of K-on.

There is only so much grimdark-up-its-own-ass anime I can stomach before I need a break and moe is the perfect palate cleanser.

These are just my personal opinions, though I am a huge moe fan, so i'll get that bias out in the open now. My apologies for the wall of text.

Question 1: "Is it bad for the anime industry to go down this route pandering to certain tastes like say sacrificing plot or characters or whatever just so that they can get that cute factor?"
Answer 1: Yes, but only if they're taking a regular show (say, a shonen action series or a shoujo romance) and throwing in moe characters just to appeal to us moe fans.

Question 2: "Is moe really that bad or are people just exaggerating it just because of their own dislike of it?"
Answer 2: As a moe fan, of course i'm going to say "no its not that bad". For one anime fan to say any other genre of anime is bad is just shortsighted and narrow (unless they're doing it for moral reasons like with Hentai or Lolicon). I personally despise most of the harem genre, but i'm not about to go bashing it and calling it a blight on anime or anything. There are people who like it.

Question 3: "What about Moeblob shows with no actual story line and just cute girls doing cute things?"
Answer 3: Once again, I love moeblob shows. One has to keep in mind that these series don't have plots because the lack of plot is their selling point . Especially with slice of life comedies. My life doesn't have an overarching plot. My life isn't some dramatic action packed adventure to destroy some dastardly villain. So, if i'm going to watch a slice of life comedy, I actually don't want it to have a plot. But even for moe series that do have plots (i.e. Girls und Panzer), the plot isn't the main focus, but rather the innocent, good-natured fun that the characters have.

I as a moe fan like good, lighthearted, innocent, cute fun. A lot of people aren't looking for that, they want action, or suspense, or character development, or drama. There's nothing wrong with either preference. The great variety is what makes anime so amazing.

However, I do think that moe is at fault for the "cookie cutter characters". Like "the emotionless girl", "the loli", "the cool girl", "the adult female lolicon", etc. These character's are fine if one is watching a moe show, but I do think its a problem that they've started flooding into non-moe genres. I think this is one reason people are starting to rise up against moe.

A month ago I would have said that there's no such thing as too much moe. But then I saw "Listen to me girls. I'm your father". The creators made Hina so moe that it got annoying. It was a chore finishing the series.

I really dislike moe, its better than having thousands of pointless fanservice anime but i still dislike it. I know why its made, its easy money for the studios, i just think they all suck

Love the cute stuff but I need a storyline. However I like slice of life stories which many consider plotless. I enjoy save the school with your singing club type shows which many consider to be simply cute girls doing cute things. Some adversity is good. Fanservice is fun too, bring it on!

Still not sure I would say I like or dislike moe or moeblob in general. I like shows or I don't like them individually but I never say, oh this is a X type show so I won't watch it. I give every single show a try on Crunchyroll and often I am pleasantly surprised by something I wasn't expecting. I still have to try hard to get into some genres, some I always drop right away but I give them all a try.

Madoka Magika was one of those. Just looked like cute magical girls until Mami had her head bitten off...

I have kind of a soft spot for Moe. I don't think it's good, but I enjoy it none-the-less.
No matter what, it's never okay to sacrifice plot or characters or what have you for the sake of pandering. Doesn't matter what it's adding, if it has nothing to do with the show it's bad. Pandering is bad, yes.
I think people exaggerate how bad it is, but I don't think they're totally wrong about it. Moe, to me, is no different then pop in the sense that it's made to sell. It's not really suppose to be creative or well thought out, it's literally just cute girls doing cute things. It's not ruining anything, it's just something that sells. That's how I see it, anyway.

As usual for me its all about the core story and 'moe' or not has no real bearing on that (for me).

This is what I always say about moe.

Moe is like fast food.
Mindless and easy to breakdown.
Covers your fix.
Can be swallowed without difficulty.
Slightly addicting, but not very filling.
A plate of sea food meticulously crafted with the perfect amount of sauce at the perfect spot is not as common as fast food.

Here's some notable comparisons.
Madoka vs K-on!
Inception vs Avengers
Fine sea food restaurant vs McDonalds

More of all the latter exist.

It's okay to have a taste for something simple every now and again. Not everything must strive for beautiful complexity. It all depends on your taste at the current moment. Moe will not kill anime. That notion is ridiculous.

deepens on what environment you put the Moe characters in.

 it’s very uncountable to see such pure minded characters placed into mature saturations.

I love my moe. Honestly, seeing these girls being all cute just gives me the squeals and lifts my spirits up. That being said, having anime dedicated to MOE won't destroy other genres of anime.

I agree, moe makes me smile and brings up my spirits too. Some times you just need some adorable things happening.

Personally, I'm a type of guy who watches anime for the character. If I find any of them moe then I'll give it a try.
