How do you feel about getting an expensive gift when you generally don't need it?

Its no problem. Thank you for giving me your points and views though, I appreciate them. It is true that I am passive aggressive, especially when it comes to my parents. Since they react violently to a lot of things, I have a hard time expressing myself and confronting them positively and assertively without having some large item flung at me. Now that I'm not in high school anymore, however, we have had more arguments that didn't end too badly. I'm just waiting for that right moment when I can be honest and tell them how I feel about certain stuff. This goes beyond the gift giving, really.

Ahh, makes sense now. The gift giving seemed so superficial to me, that's why I responded the way I did. Anyway, this has gone beyond an 18 year-old's capability. A fond adieu.

However, if you want my two cents worth, assert yourself in a mature fashion. If possible, arrange a sit down with them and get everything off your chest. If things get ugly, silently withdrawal until they're ready to behave.

I usually feel quite bad about it, if it is going to be something I will use than that's fine.
Although I can only really think of one such gift; a watch that my parents got me on my 18th birthday, I suppose that can be excused though, even still I can only think of two times that I have worn it.

Yeah, it's a bit awkward. There are some family friends who will give me jewelry. I guess it makes them happy to do it. I'm not going to change how I treat them (except, I might wear it sometimes - and I don't generally wear stuff like that).
