I think that's an entirely different issue, honestly.. you're talking emotional trauma and Stockholm Syndrome-like shit there. While I may disagree with your example - I don't agree with 'gone is gone' either.

There was actually times she got to the point she wanted the man to die, I still remember her screaming I HATE HIM, I HATE HIM during periods while I was around her. Edit: Although it sounds alike to Stockholm's it's a possibility.
