That's normal. That's pretty much the only noise the PS3 Slim makes.

Mine does not make noises like that. It does sometimes when I first put it in but not like that. So I would say its not normal but as long as it works and the noise doesn't bother you than its fine.

That is loud compared to my Phat PS3, but I have never used a PS3 slim so I have no idea how loud they are suppose to be. The original Phat PS3 is silent, and the only time you hear it is when the disc slides in, but even then it is no where near as loud as yours when the disc slides in.

The Super Slim PS3 is suppose to be even louder (Even Sony admits it) than than the Slim PS3, and I saw a video that IGN made where they recorded the sound of the new Super Slim PS3 to see how loud it is and it was no where near as loud as yours. Just above a whisper, and nothing you would notice playing a game or watching a movie. Based off of that, I would say something is wrong with your drive.

I just thought of something else in reference to my post above.

My PS3 sits vertically and not horizontally like you have yours sitting, and that could play a role in the way the disc spins and vibrates that could effect the sound it makes.

Thanks guys. What's odd is not all discs do that. I put in NI No Kuni and it was almost silent. I wonder if some discs are not as thick as others and cause a vibration.

This could be the reason. There is always slight variations between discs, and no disc is perfectly round and even thickness across the entire disc, so every disc actually vibrates. It is a matter of how well a disc was pressed in determining how much it vibrates.

This was a big issue when 56x high speed CD-burners came out onto the market. Because they spun the discs so fast, if you used a disc that was not made perfectly, it would actually shatter inside of your cd-burner and of course destroyed it and the drive in the process.

Was that a DVD video or a game? I think the PS3 reads DVDs at 8x but only reads BDs at 2x and that might be where the extra noise is coming from also since it is spinning faster reading DVDs. And put that with what was stated above about how not all discs are perfect then you'll get some extra noise.

He put in Azumanga Diaoh which was only released on DVD. Great Anime and Manga BTW, one of my favorite comedies.

PS - DVD speed and BD speed can't be directly compared by their "#x" as 8x for DVD is in reference to the first DVD speed. 8x means that it reads DVDs 8 times faster than 1x DVD, which is 1.52MB/s. The same principle applies to CDs (1x is 0.15MB/s) and BDs (1x is 4.29MB/s). A 1x BD has a higher velocity than a 1x DVD, and a 1x DVD has a higher velocity than a 1x CD.

A 2x Blu-Ray spins at the same velocity as a 6.5x DVD or a 58.8x CD.

PS #2 - Just some more info. A 1x BD spins between 810-1957rpm, where as a 1x DVD spins between 580-1700rpm, depending on where the optical head is on the disc. (When it is reading the inner most part of the disc, it does not need to spin the disc as fast)

Oh. Whenever I put a DVD in my PS3 it spins a lot faster and makes more noise then with Blu-ray material so I thought that might have been it.

It still does, just wanted to point out that comparing BD 2x to DVD 8x isn't the same as comparing a DVD 2x to a DVD 8x.

DVD 8x still spins faster than a BD 2x, but only slightly faster.
