There is interesting history behind what is and isn't "Satanic"

Allot of it comes down to undermining rival religions in the distant past......though now it is about control of the faithful and demonizing anything that could undermine the religion hold on people.

The funny thing is that more often than not, yes it is. There is a really good reason for it too: Japan has no reason to like Christianity or even respect it. They even have some motivation to hate it.

So yeah, they more often than not portray demons as bastions of freedom while they portray the church as a symbol of corruption and oppression.

No, I totally disagree. I think it has to do with the very different philosophy in the East and West.
Buddhism and Shintoism emphasis balance and complementarity. Nothing is inherently good or bad. once taken to an extreme, something become dangerous. That's why in Asian mythology, many creatures are neither good or bad, they just "are". They can do good, or bad.

On the other hand, Christianity (like Islam and Judaism) are fundamentally manichaean.
God is good, Satan is bad. Devils are bad, angels are good. You're acting good or bad. You can never act too good, or love God too much.

So when Japanese use Christian mythology and infuse their own philosophy in it, the two worlds collide and we have devils that tend to act good, and angels that tend to act bad. Highschool DxD or Hataraku! Maou-sama are recent example or that "trope".

The Church is almost always portrayed as the bad guys though.

Not neutral -- corrupt, evil.

Demons as you say can be good, can be bad. Angels similar. But the Church is almost always evil.
