I quite liked Valkyria Chronicles

Eternal Sonata! It's highly colourful, perfect graphics, cute characters and great plot, I also learned a lot about Frederic Chopin throughout the game's cutscenes.

Blue dragon is also really good and I heard Tales of Vesperia is too. You can play demo's for eternal and tales (:

Both of those are Wii games. As long as you have a standard Wii console that is capable of playing Gamecube games, then I recommend finding a used copy of Skies of Arcadia. You might have to pay a fair amount on eBay or similar sites, but the Gamecube version is just as good if not better than the Dreamcast version.

What other consoles, computers, and devices do you have?

No such thing i'm afraid...Alright that isn't entirely true. While I don't like JRPGs much occasionally one comes along that I do enjoy.

I'd recommend Lost Odyssey. The battle system is solid, the story is great (story is usually my biggest problem with JRPGs), and it's not terribly expensive to buy at this point.

i second this nomination. very awesome jrpg. voice acting is top notch and the gameplay is a classic mix between the tales series (being able to move around the battlefield), persona (in the way that familiars work using your character's own hp/mp) and pokemon (in the most basic sense of capturing and evolving creatures)

I agree with all of the above. Ni no Kuni is worth every penny --- and then some. Definitely one of the best JRPGs of this, or any generation.

Well you could get Ni No.....oh, thats been covered :p My copy should be shipping Friday so cant talk 1st hand on it but its been getting very good press, but reviews do flag up a lot of grinding in it.

If you have a PS3 but dont have Valkyria Chronicles, your doing it wrong! Loved that game, great story and gorgeous visuals and an actually weel made battle system. Twas the reason i got my PS3 in the first palce

As Pomff said, Lost Odyssey is another great game, probably best one on the 360. If you do get it, watch all the "1000 years of dreams", how they managed such emotional stories using just words on screen and some music is stunning.

Check out the Persona games, mainly 3 and 4. 3 is out on both PS2 and PSP while 4 came out on the PS2 and soon to the Vita (tempting me to get one for it).

If you dont mind grid based strategy games, try either Disgaea, Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy Tactics or Jeanne D'Arc (not out in Europe sadly) on PSP. There is also the Advance Wars games on DS and GBA. Also Fire Emblem: Awakening is out in the USA on the 3DS soon, think Europe isnt far behind.

PC has kind of a drought of JRPG games as its not a big market in Japan, mainly used for MMO and Visual novels there. But check out the Ys games, couldnt tell you which is best but heard they are great actiony JRPG games.

Hope any of these help.

I'll chip in with the Lost Odyssey love. Great game and I think the stories were one of the best parts.

A lot of other good games were mentioned, but the Persona games seem to have been missed. Definitely give Persona 4 a try.

Persona 4 Golden is fantastic. But by far and away the BEST JRPG I've played in the past decade:

Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky for the PSP. Absolute utter masterpiece. I wrote a review of it if you wanna see my complete thoughts: http://www.shadowedblade.net/2012/01/the-legend-of-heroes-trails-in-the-sky-psp/

But ya, it's a masterpiece. Worthy of every bit of praise I can lavish.

Go for the Phantasy Star and Dragon Quest games if you appreciate old school jrpgs. For PS, people swear by the finale that is IV, which is considered to be the best in the series for its gameplay and storytelling scenes. The Online and Ultimate series are spin offs and have no connection to the original PS canon.

Skies of Arcadia was made by former PS staff. It's based around sky pirates finding treasure, saving the world, the usual cliched jrpg shit. Cool game though.

For strategy, sample the Langrisser, Shining Force, FF Tactics, Fire Emblem and the Ogre Battle games.

You can easily get most of these games for free online.
