I'll put it this way, in a mostly spoiler-free fashion: Chihaya's in-series nickname is "beauty in vain" - she's thought of as pretty until she opens her mouth, and speaks mostly about her obsession with the game Karuta. Taichi's had a long-standing crush on her, but since she's terribly oblivious, she's never seemed to notice. Add in the other childhood friend who forms this main love triangle, and the sauce of romance is there. It's just simmering rather than boiling with passion - the majority of passion you see revolves around the game, heh.

Blehhhh...I hate love triangles. The anime still sounds interesting though haha. I'll add it to the 'need to watch' list for sure.

The triangle in this case takes a back seat to the game, the tournaments, training, the supporting characters and their backgrounds, etc. (I actually enjoy the insight into some of these characters, because they have history with the main cast, and keep showing up...the extra depth is a good thing.) As for the triangle, it's an undertone running through the story, and I haven't read the original material, but as of this point in the second season, the most you see are some longing looks, and a few sweet moments, like the pics posted. I don't know if it'll get resolved by the end of this season, or if there will be a third. I still think it's worth a watch, either way.

I'm not actually too fond of love triangles either, but the one in Chihayafuru is really great. Though I am in full support of Taichi and Chihaya. :3 Like it was said earlier, romance isn't the focus, but Chihayafuru is my all-time favorite anime. The emotions, friendships, intensity, and everything is done really well! And the romance, when it does show up is amazing <3 You should definitely give it a try! :D
